Lady Bucs Sweep HSU, Fall to TAMUC

Alison Welch had 10 kills and hit .476 as the Lady Bucs swept Henderson State Saturday. CBU dropped a four-setter to Texas A&M-Commerce earlier Saturday.

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.–The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split a pair of matches Saturday in the Henderson State University Classic, falling in four sets to Texas A&M-Commerce before sweeping host Henderson State to wrap up the weekend.

In the opener, the Lady Bucs (2-2) scored four straight points to break a 20-all tie and win the first set 25-21, but the Lions (4-0) built an 11-2 lead on their way to a 25-18 win in the second set to even the match. In set three, the Lions scored six straight to break open a 17-8 en route to a 25-14 win, and they scored four of the last five to claim a 25-23 win in a nip-and-tuck fourth set to complete the victory.

Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) led the Lady Bucs with 13 kills, while Hannah Kurtz (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) added seven. Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) dished out 24 assists, and Marisa Wong (Germantown, Tenn./Houston HS) notched a team-high 11 digs.

In the second match, the Lady Bucs used an 11-2 run to turn an 8-7 deficit into an 18-10 lead on their way to a 25-17 first-set win. In the second set, they took a small lead early and held on for a 25-19 win. In the third set, they jumped to an 11-4 lead and held on to win 25-19 to wrap up the victory over Henderson State (0-4).

Gillis led the Lady Bucs with 12 kills, followed by 10 from Alison Welch (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS), who hit .467. Reber collected a match-high 25 assists, and Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) added 14 assists. Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) logged a match-high nine digs.

The Lady Bucs return to action Friday in the University of North Alabama Classic in Florence, Ala. Friday, they face Harding and Missouri S&T, and Saturday they take on Rollins and Missouri-St. Louis. Their home opener is set for Friday, Oct. 4, against Shorter.
