WINTER PARK, Fla.-Fourth-seeded Valdosta State used a 107th-minute golden goal to defeat the fifth-seeded Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 1-0 in double-overtime Friday night in the first round of the NCAA Division II South Regional.
The game was evenly-matched throughout, with VSU (12-6-2) holding a slim 12-10 edge in shots in regulation.
Emily Wragg (Nottingham, England/The Becket School) made five saves in regulation to keep the game scoreless. The Lady Bucs (13-6) took the only shot in the first overtime, but the Blazers controlled play in the second overtime. They took a pair of shots early in the period, but they were unable to find the net until the 107th minute. Malin Hegeler sent a throughball into the box for Erin Hill, who finished for the golden goal.
In all, VSU out-shot the Lady Bucs 15-11 for the game, including a 6-4 edge in shots on goal.
VSU advances to play top-seeded Rollins Sunday afternoon.
