MEMPHIS-Christian Brothers University senior guard
Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn., White Station HS) drew a foul and sank two free throws with 0.2 seconds remaining to lift the Lady Bucs to a 53-51 win over West Georgia Thursday night as they rallied from a 13-point first-half deficit.
The Wolves (7-3, 2-2 GSC) used a 17-2 run to take a 23-10 lead on a Taylor Beverly layup with 7:16 remaining in the first half. Beverly scored the final nine points of the run.
CBU (4-6, 2-3) steadily chipped away at the lead. First a 7-0 run capped by a
Taylor Pugh (Memphis, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) jumper with 4:01 remaining in the first half brought them within 23-17, but UWG stretched the lead back to 10 points. Another 6-0 run early in the second half brought them within a 34-32 margin on a
Courtney Banks (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) jumper with 15:58 remaining in the game, but UWG stretched its lead back to seven.
A Ridgell jumper capped another 6-0 burst that brought CBU back within 39-38 with 10:26 remaining, but again UWG answered with a 5-0 burst to take a six-point lead. The Lady Bucs finally battled back to tie the game at 46 on a Ridgell jumper with 5:00 remaining, and a pair of Pugh free throws gave them a 48-46 edge with 4:09 remaining. UWG regained the lead on a Beverly layup and a Katrina Littlepage three-pointer with 2:17 remaining, giving them a 51-48 lead.
Ridgell buried a deep three-pointer from the right side with 45 seconds remaining in the game as the shot clock dwindled, tying the game back up at 51. CBU forced a shot clock violation with 12 seconds remaining to get the ball back, and UWG fouled with 1.7 seconds remaining. After CBU's first inbounds pass was deflected, running 0.4 seconds off the clock, the Lady Bucs passed it in to Ridgell on the right baseline, and she drew the foul on her shot with 0.2 seconds remaining. She made both free throws to seal the victory.
Ridgell scored a game-high 22 points with eight rebounds, and Pugh scored 14 with seven blocks, five rebounds and four steals.
Beverly paced the Wolves with 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Marion Lemonnier added 12.
The Wolves shot 42 percent (21-of-50) for the game to CBU's 39.6 percent (21-of-53). Each team shot 20 percent (3-of-15) from three-point range. UWG held a commanding 44-21 lead in rebounds, including a 16-5 edge in offensive boards, but the Lady Bucs forced 25 UWG turnovers while committing 11.
