No. 16 Union Outlasts Lady Bucs 73-61

MEMPHIS-No. 16 Union used a 17-7 run midway through the second half to pull away from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs for a 73-61 win Thursday night in the Lady Bucs' final game of the season.

The high-powered Lady Bulldogs (23-3, 19-3 GSC) led for most of the game, but the Lady Bucs (8-20, 6-16) never allowed the lead to grow past 10 points in the first half. CBU closed the half on a 12-4 run to go into halftime trailing just 36-34 after Courtney Banks (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) knocked down her third three-pointer of the half.

The Lady Bucs remained in striking distance until the decisive Union run, capped by a Fredi Nielsen free throw with 5:34 remaining that gave Union a 64-48 lead, and CBU never came closer than the final 12-point margin again.

Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) closed out her record-setting career with 25 points and six rebounds, shooting 11-for-20 from the floor in the game. Ridgell finishes her career with school records of 1,553 points and 200 steals. Rachel Lee (Jackson, Tenn./Jackson Christian School) scored 15, and Banks scored 11. Taylor Pugh (Memphis, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) scored 10 points with five rebounds and three blocks as she broke the school record for blocks in a season in her final game, giving her 59 for the season. Pugh also finished third in career blocks with 122.

Amy Philamlee led the Lady Bulldogs with 28 points and six assists. Amber Rechis scored 17, and DeAnna Thompson scored 12 with 12 rebounds.

Union shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) for the game, including 26.7 percent (8-of-30) from three-point range, while the Lady Bucs were 42.3 percent (22-of-52) overall and 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from beyond the arc. Union out-rebounded CBU 39-27, including a 14-6 edge in offensive boards.
