LIVINGSTON, Ala.-Host West Alabama used one big inning in each game to claim a 9-4, 15-0 sweep of the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Saturday afternoon. CBU senior outfielder
Leigh Ward (Oriental, N.C., Pamlico HS) broke the school record for stolen bases in a season in game two.
GAME 1:WHAT HAPPENED:The Lady Bucs (7-24, 2-15 GSC) carried a 4-3 lead into the sixth inning, but UWA (14-16, 6-13) scored six runs in the inning to claim victory. CBU set a school record, drawing 13 walks in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:• The Lady Bucs opened the scoring in the top of the second inning.
Amy Koury (Pearland, Texas/Pearland HS) and
Olivia Parsels (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) walked and moved to second and third on a double-steal.
Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) drove them in with an RBI groundout.
• The Tigers regained the lead in the bottom of the third when Jordyn Whiddon followed a double with a two-run homer.
• A double and a single led to another UWA run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.
• CBU closed within a run again in the top of the fifth.
Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) walked, and an
Amy Gracia (Fontana, Calif./International Polytechnic HS) single and a Koury walk loaded the bases with one out. Parsels lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score
Kasey Beekman (Aurora, Colo./Aliso Niguel (Calif.) HS), who ran for Steagall.
• The Lady Bucs took the lead in the top of the sixth.
Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) reached on an error but was erased when
Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) grounded into a force play. Walks to Steagall and
Lauren Provence (Millington, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) loaded the bases with two out, and Gracia hit a two-run single to put CBU ahead 4-3.
• UWA plated six runs in the bottom of the sixth on a single, two doubles, four walks and a home run.
KEY STATS:• Gracia went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and two RBI.
• Gonzalez and Steagall each went 0-for-2, but they each tied the school single-game record by drawing thre walks.
• Provence, Koury and Ward collected two walks each.
• Oyhenart went 1-for-4.
• Koury stole two bases.
GAME 2:WHAT HAPPENED:The Tigers scored 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to a 15-0 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED:• UWA used three walks, five singles, three doubles and a home run to score 12 runs in the bottom of the first.
• The Tigers tacked on a run in the second inning on an error and two passed balls.
• UWA set the final margin in the fourth on a walk and a two-run homer by Audrey Diekmann.
KEY STATS:• Gonzalez went 2-for-3.
• Oyhenart, Gracia and Parsels were each 1-for-2.
• Ward walked and stole second in the top of the fifth inning for her school-record 17th stolen base of the season, breaking the mark set by Netia Shores in 2006.
WHAT'S NEXT:CBU and UWA meet again tomorrow at 2 p.m. for a single game. Their next home game is Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host LeMoyne-Owen for a doubleheader.
