Lady Statesmen Outhit Lady Bucs in Sweep

MEMPHIS-Visiting Delta State scored nine runs in each game as they claimed a 9-4, 9-1 sweep over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Delta State (17-16) used a five-run third inning to take control and a three-run seventh to finish off a 9-4 victory over the Lady Bucs (9-30).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• DSU opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first on a walk and two singles.
• The Lady Bucs answered in the bottom of the inning as Taylor Rosa-Ramon (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell HS) singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Gabrielle Sereika (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) single.
• DSU blew it open in the third inning with five runs on four singles and two hit batters.
• The Lady Bucs shaved a run off the deficit in the bottom of the fourth when Sereika blasted a one-out homer to center.
• CBU pulled within three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Rosa-Ramon doubled and pinch-runner Alexis Seward (Chino, Calif./Chino HS) moved to third on a Jennifer Gonzalez (Covina, Calif./Charter Oak HS) single and scored on another Sereika single. Lauren Provence (Millington, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) singled, but Gonzalez was tagged out trying to score and a lineout and a strikeout ended the threat.
• DSU added three runs in the top of the seventh on four singles and a double.
• The Lady Bucs set the final margin with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) led off with a walk. Pinch-runner Alana Byrd (Jackson, Tenn./Liberty Magnet HS) stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.

KEY STATS:
• Sereika went 3-for-3 with a homer, a run and three RBI.
• Rosa-Ramon went 2-for-4 with a double and a run.
• Leigh Ward (Oriental, N.C./Pamlico HS) went 0-for-1 but drew two walks.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Statesmen did all their damage in two innings, scoring four with none out in the first and adding five in the fourth inning to claim a 9-1 win over the Lady Bucs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• DSU opened the game with two singles and a double to score one run, and Brook Cline blasted a three-run homer to center to give DSU a 4-0 lead.
• CBU scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the third. Ward opened the inning with a bunt single and moved to second on a single by Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS). Gonzalez followed with an RBI double to left-center, but two foulouts and a strikeout ended the threat with the bases loaded.
• DSU added five runs in the fourth on two walks, a hit batter, an error and two singles to set the final margin.

KEY STATS:
• Oyhenart went 3-for-3 with a stolen base.
• Ward was 2-for-2 with a run and a stolen base.
• Amanda Wade (Water Valley, Ky./Graves County HS) tossed a perfect inning of relief.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs return to action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host a doubleheader against Southern Arkansas.
