Lady Bucs Tame Lady Dragons 80-62

MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs rolled to an 80-62 win over Lane Monday night at Canale Arena to cap a long, unusual day. The game was originally scheduled for Lane's J.F. Lane Gymnasium, but Monday's thunderstorms damaged the gym, forcing the venue change. After Lane's bus broke down on the way to Memphis, the game was delayed another hour, finally tipping off at 8:05.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Once the game did tip off, the Lady Bucs (2-1) seized control quickly with an 8-0 run capped by a Madison Luckett (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) free throw that gave them an 8-3 lead with 5:13 remaining in the first quarter.
• A 16-3 run late in the second quarter extended the CBU lead to 17 points at 31-14 on a Kenzie Jones (Park Hills, Mo./Central HS) three-point play.
• The Lady Dragons (1-5) never came closer than 10 points again, and the Lady Bucs led by as many as 26 points in the second half.

KEY STATS:
• Luckett led the way for CBU with 18 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three blocks. She was 5-of-8 overall, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, and she went 6-of-7 at the charity stripe.
Rachel Lee (Jackson, Tenn./Jackson Christian School) scored 15 with four rebounds.
Samantha Reeves (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) added 12 with two steals.
• Jones added 10 with three assists and two steals.
Lindsey Owen (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) added eight with three assists.
• The Lady Bucs shot 49.2 percent (29-of-59) for the game, including 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from three-point range. Lane shot 35.2 percent (25-of-71) overall and just 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from beyond the arc.
• Lane out-rebounded the Lady Bucs 47-38, including a 22-8 edge in offensive boards. The Lady Dragons committed 15 turnovers to CBU's 13.

HEAD COACH SARAH CONDRA'S THOUGHTS:
On the win overall:
"I was pretty pleased with our scoring. We had some balanced scoring. I'll be honest, I wasn't happy with our defense in the second half. You held their best player to four points in the first half, and then you make some subs and all of a sudden she has 19, that's ridiculous. But overall, we did some good things. There's a lot of things to build on, and some things we need to learn from."

On the offense:
"I didn't think we ran our offense as well in the first half, but I thought in the second half we really started running and we started getting open looks. Last year we might not have knocked those down, and this year we're shooting better. We shot 49 percent for the game, and we tell them we want to shoot 40 percent. So it helps when you're running the offense and when you knock the shots down."

On junior guard Mikaela Blissett (Oran, Mo./Scott County Central HS):
"Blissett is not your superstar, but she is so solid. That's why she's gotten in the starting lineup, that's why she's getting minutes. She just does little things. She's a great defender, and that's what we're going to put out is our best defense. That's why she's starting for us, and then she goes 3-for-4 and she gives you 6 points and 4 rebounds, that's what you need."

On senior forward Samantha Reeves (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy):
"Sam's solid as always, glad to see her get some easier stuff tonight. She's struggled in the first couple of games. But tonight I thought she was poised, she didn't rush. And she was getting the shots she wanted. I was proud of what she did for us."

On playing with a big lead in the second half:
"I told them my expectation doesn't change. You shouldn't want me to coach you any differently if we've got a lead. I don't consider those garbage minutes, I consider those important minutes. When you're fighting for time, those are important. I thought Sara Owen did a really good job. She had 5 points, she was 2-for-4. She was solid defensively and that's why I went to her first in the second half. I was really pleased with her play."

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs return to action tomorrow night at 6 p.m. as they visit No. 12 Union for their GSC opener. Their next home game is next Tuesday night, Dec. 6, as they host Harding at 5 p.m.
