CLINTON, Miss.-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs opened Saturday's game with a 13-5 run and outscored host Mississippi College 23-15 in the fourth quarter as they claimed a 72-63 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• After the Lady Choctaws (3-4, 1-3 GSC) scored the first basket of the game, CBU (5-4, 2-3) used a 13-3 run bookended by
Samantha Reeves (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) three-pointers to take a 13-5 edge. Reeves scored eight of her team-high 18 points during the run.
• MC fought back into the game with a 6-0 burst early in the second quarter, closing within 20-18 on an Olivia Mabry fastbreak layup with 8:35 remaining in the quarter. MC later used a 9-0 burst capped by a Toni Woods jumper to take a 27-24 lead with 4:59 remaining in the first half.
• CBU threatened to pull away with a 19-4 run bridging the halftime break, giving them a 43-31 lead, their largest of the game, on a
Mikaela Blissett (Oran, Mo./Scott County Central HS) layup with 6:42 remaining in the third quarter.
• MC answered with a 12-0 run to tie the game at 43 on an Ashley Minor fastbreak layup with 3:08 remaining in the quarter, and the lead stayed within three points through the end of the quarter.
• The Lady Bucs scored on six of their first eight possessions of the fourth quarter, stretching their lead to 62-54 on a
Rachel Lee (Jackson, Tenn./Jackson Christian School) triple with 5:59 remaining, and they never allowed MC closer than seven points again.
KEY STATS:
• Reeves scored 18 points with seven rebounds, both team-highs, in 26 minutes. She finished 4-of-6 from the floor, making both of her three-pointers, and she went 8-of-10 at the free throw line.
•
Madison Luckett (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) celebrated her birthday with 16 points and two steals. She was 5-of-12 from the floor and made all six free throw attempts.
•
Courtney Banks (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) scored 14 points with six assists and a season-best six rebounds.
• Lee added 10 with six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
• The Lady Bucs shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the floor, and they were 80.8 percent (21-of-26) at the charity stripe. MC shot 45.1 percent (23-of-51) and was 83.3 percent (15-of-18) at the free throw line.
• The Lady Bucs out-rebounded MC 31-28, including a 9-7 edge in offensive boards, but they committed 22 turnovers to MC's 21.
