Lady Bucs Outlast Tigers 72-70

MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to claim a 72-70 win over West Alabama Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Bucs (8-12, 6-10 GSC) took command early in the game, using a 17-7 run capped by a Courtney Banks (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) three-pointer to take a 24-16 lead with 7:45 remaining.
• West Alabama (7-13, 4-12) answered with three straight three-pointers by Ariel Wilson and Catherine Taylor, sparking a 25-7 run capped by another Taylor triple that gave them a 41-31 lead just over a minute into the third quarter. UWA extended its lead to 11 points later in the quarter, their largest of the night.
• After CBU trimmed the deficit to 52-47 early in the fourth quarter, UWA used two free throws and another Wilson triple to take a 57-47 lead with 8:22 remaining.
• Madison Luckett (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) sparked the CBU comeback with a layup off a Courtney Banks (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) feed, then Rachel Lee (Jackson, Tenn./Jackson Christian School) found Samantha Reeves (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) for a three-point play to cut the deficit to five with 7:25 remaining. A Reeves layup later cut the deficit to 62-58 with 4:54 remaining, then Lee sank all three free throws after being fouled on a three-pointer with 4:24 remaining to bring CBU within one point.
• Luckett gave the Lady Bucs a 65-64 lead when she knocked down a jumper with 2:41 remaining. After the teams traded baskets, Sydney King sank a triple to give the Tigers a 70-67 edge with 1:37 to play. Ashley Schaefer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) answered with a corner three with 1:06 remaining to tie the game at 70.
• The Tigers missed a shot with a chance to take the lead with 28 seconds remaining, and Luckett hauled down the rebound to give CBU the ball. After a timeout, the Lady Bucs worked the ball in to Reeves, who missed her first shot but was fouled on the put-back with 3.1 seconds remaining. She sank both free throws to give CBU the lead, and UWA's final shot was after the buzzer.

COACH SARAH CONDRA'S THOUGHTS:
"For most of the game I was not very happy. We're better than that defensively. West Alabama is playing really well, and they're a lot better than their record indicates. But we had a really good practice last night, really working on our help defense and our on-ball defense. I was really disappointed with how we came out defensively."

"But I told them in the locker room, we had a timeout with three minutes left and we said you've got three minutes to really grind and compete and I thought they did that last three minutes. We gave ourselves a chance to win and, we pulled it out."

"We shared the ball really well tonight. I thought our post entry passes were really good tonight. We had girls run the floor that Courtney was able to hit for layups in transition."

"These seniors have been here, I'm so proud of them. Especially Ashley Schaefer. She's been asked to do a whole lot, and she's played really well the last three or four games. April's come in and been an energy person. And not only are they good basketball players, but they're really good kids and we're going to miss them for sure."

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs return to action Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., when they celebrate both Senior Day and Homecoming against West Georgia.
