Lady Bucs Split in First Day of Crossover

HOOVER, Ala.-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split a pair of four-set matches in the 2017 GSC/SSC South Region Crossover Friday, defeating Lynn before losing to Eckerd.

CBU 3, Lynn 1 (25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 25-13):
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Lynn (4-8) used a five-point run to take a 10-7 lead, but the Lady Bucs (11-12) regained the lead for good with a 7-2 burst capped by a Kapria Manning (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) kill that gave them a 19-16 lead, and the teams traded side-outs until the Lady Bucs won the set 25-22 on a Mary Kathryn Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS) kill.
• In the second set, CBU jumped to early leads of 7-3 and 12-5. The Knights scored six straight to close within 13-12, but CBU held the lead, using an 11-4 run to take a 24-16 lead on an attack error. After Lynn scored three points, Alexa Henderson (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie HS) ended the set with a kill.
• CBU opened a 15-9 lead in the third set with a 6-1 burst, but the Knights used a 10-2run to take a 20-18 edge on an attack error. Two Emma Lenoir (Chattanooga, Tenn./East Hamilton HS) kills and a Henderson ace gave the Lady Bucs a 22-21 lead, but the Knights would score the set's final three points to win 25-23 and force a fourth set.
• CBU took commanding early leads of 5-2, 9-4 and 15-5 in the third set, with a Miller ace capping a six-point run to give CBU a 15-5 edge. The Lady Bucs pulled away to a 25-13 win, scoring match point on a Manning ace.

KEY STATS:
• Lenoir led the Lady Bucs with 19 kills and three aces, hitting .145 with seven digs and a block.
• Manning hit .353 with 14 kills and 12 digs, both setting career-highs for a match shorter than five sets.
• Erica Maurer (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) added nine kills with four digs and two blocks.
• Henderson racked up 45 assists with 10 digs.
• Blythe Clausen (Hendersonvile, Tenn./Pope John Paul II HS) garnered 14 digs with two aces.

Eckerd 3, CBU 1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-13, 25-23):
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Tritons (8-5) took early leads of 5-2 and 9-4 as they seized control in the opening set, never allowing CBU closer than four points in a 25-19 win.
• In the second set it was the Lady Bucs who took an early lead, with a four-point run giving them a 5-1 lead, but Eckerd drew even at 12-all with a five-point run. CBU regained the lead for good with a 7-1 run to take a 19-13 lead, and they never allowed Eckerd closer than three points again.
• The Tritons hit .440 as they pulled away quickly in the third set, building leads of 3-0, 7-2 and 12-3 en route to a 25-13 win.
• The fourth set was back-and-forth throughout, with 14 ties, eight lead changes and no lead of more than two points. CBU took a 21-19 lead on a double-block by Maurer and Miller, but Eckerd regained a 23-21 lead with four straight points. Kills by Maurer and Miller tied the set back up at 23, but a pair of Mackenzie Redner kills gave Eckerd a 25-23 win to clinch the match.

KEY STATS:
• Lenoir hit .222 with 12 kills, 11 digs and two aces.
• Miller hit .474 with 10 kills and three blocks.
• Clausen amassed 15 digs.
• Henderson had 33 assists with nine digs, four kills and two aces.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs wrap up their South Region Crossover schedule Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. as they face Rollins. Their next home match is set for Tuesday, Oct. 24, when they host Lyon at 7 p.m.
