MEMPHIS-After honoring two seniors in pregame ceremonies, Christian Brothers University freshman
Kapria Manning (Olive Branch, Miss., Center Hill HS) sent them off in style as she pounded a career-high 22 kills with 13 digs, two blocks and two aces to lead the Lady Bucs to a four-set win over Auburn-Montgomery.
CBU 3, Auburn-Montgomery 1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23):
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Bucs (15-18, 7-9 GSC) used an eight-point run to open a commanding lead in what had been a nip-and-tuck first set, taking a 20-11 lead on an
Alexa Henderson (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie HS) kill.
Emma Lenoir (Chattanooga, Tenn./East Hamilton HS) capped the set with three kills in a set-ending four-point run.
• In the second set, AUM (9-21, 1-15) used a 5-1 burst to take a 5-3 lead and they never trailed again. They reached their largest lead of four points five times, last at 17-13 before CBU rallied for a 17-all tie on a Lenoir ace. After five more ties, as late as 23-23, the Warhawks scored the final two points to win the set 25-23.
• AUM used a 6-2 run to take a 9-7 lead in the third set, but CBU regained the lead for good when back-to-back Manning aces capped a 7-1 run to give the Lady Bucs an 18-15 edge. The Lady Bucs held on to win 25-21 on an
Erica Maurer (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) kill.
• The Warhawks appeared to have the fourth set well in hand when a seven-point run gave them an early 11-4 lead. CBU answered with a 10-2 run to take a 14-12 lead on a
Gennah Schoen (Portland, Ore./David Douglas HS) kill, and the Lady Bucs would never trail again. A 5-1 burst broke a tie and gave CBU a 20-16 lead on a
Ke'alohilani Wong (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kamehameha HS) ace, but the Warhawks closed within a point three times, last at 24-23 on a service error, but a Maurer kill gave CBU match point for the victory.
