Cotton Blossoms Edge Lady Bucs 42-40

MEMPHIS-Visiting Arkansas-Monticello sank two go-ahead free throws with 3.5 seconds remaining as they claimed a 42-40 win over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Tuesday night at Canale Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The teams traded runs early in the game. First, UAM (3-2) used a 9-0 run spanning nearly five minutes of the first quarter to open an 11-2 lead on a Taylor Collins triple with 5:32 remaining.
• The Lady Bucs (1-3) answered with a 13-3 burst to take a 15-14 lead on a Shelmesha Barbee (Ripley, Tenn./Ripley HS) layup with 5:11 remaining in the half.
• The Cotton Blossoms answered that with a 16-2 run that gave them a 30-17 lead on an Idalis Rubalcava jumper with 8:57 remaining in the third quarter.
• From there, CBU steadily whittled away at the lead. First, an 8-1 burst sparked by an Emily Reeves (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) triple and capped by a Rafaella Angelidou (Thessaloniki, Greece/Aristoteleio Kollegeio) three-point play cut the deficit to 31-25 with 5:28 remaining.
• Another Angelidou bucket with 20 seconds remaining knotted the game at 40 as she capped a 6-0 CBU spurt.
• After UAM called timeout to advance the ball, Charlynn Perry drew a shooting foul with 3.5 seconds remaining and sank both free throws.
• The Lady Bucs called a timeout to advance the ball, but Angelidou's shot at a game-winning three-pointer missed as time expired.

KEY STATS:
• Angelidou led the Lady Bucs with 11 points, grabbing three rebounds.
• Barbee scored eight with five rebounds and two blocks.
• Reeves added seven.
• Kenzie Jones (Park Hills, Mo./Central HS) dished out seven assists and grabbed seven rebound with five points before fouling out.
• Both teams struggled offensively. CBU shot just 28.3 percent (15-of-53) from the field, including 15.8 percent (3-of-19) from three-point range. The Cotton Blossoms finished 33.3 percent (13-of-39) overall and just 7.7 percent (1-of-13) from beyond the arc.
• The Lady Bucs out-rebounded UAM 38-27, including a 16-8 edge in offensive boards. CBU committed 20 turnovers while forcing 16.

HEAD COACH SARAH CONDRA'S THOUGHTS:
"It was pretty disappointing. Statistically you think any time you hold a team to 42 you should come out with the win, holding them shooting 33 percent from the field and 7 percent from the three point line, but we didn't shoot it any better. It was just a matter of not getting shots to fall. We gave up to many points at the free throw line. It was one of our keys to eliminate the easy points. We have a lot of young players trying to adjust to the one touch. That one came back and just bit us in the butt tonight."

On the young players:
"Brynne Lytle, she's just got a mentality about her and she's very aggressive, I was really impressed with her ability to break the press and attack the gaps. I didn't think she got rattled, most of her shots were good, they just didn't fall. It was one of those nights. Shelmesha got a lot more minutes tonight, ending up with 8 points and 5 rebounds. I feel like she's finally starting to get comfortable. Johnna's finding her niche, I think there for a game or two she was trying to force it a little bit. So I told her just do what you do best, be solid and be our defensive player that we can go to. She's got the ability to be a defensive specialist for us, once she figures out where she can put her hands. She's so aggressive on the ball it's something she'll figure out. I was just impressed with how they played tonight."

On offensive struggles:
"The first half, our turnovers were 14 at halftime. The thing about this team, and what I really like about it, they're really competitive. We got down 11-2 I called a timeout and we ended up finishing the quarter holding them to only two more points. The effort is there, it just comes down to execution. Once we learn how to execute, we're going to be fine and it's going to be fun to watch."

On lessons learned lonight:
"Tonight's the first night we faced a lot of zone. Figuring out how to play against it and just playing together we're so young and inexperienced. Other than Blisset, no one has really played a ton of minutes from last year."

On Courtney Banks being out:
"With Courtney being out I'm trying to think positively about next year when she won't be here. Kenzie and Sarah, this is an opportunity for them to prove what they're capable to do and give them the experience they'll need for next year. Courtney is going to give us that depth and experience and that go to player that we're missing."

On the early signing period:
"We signed two early and got another commitment the other day, a kid from Collierville. Emma Kellaher, from Wisconsin, she's about 5-11 a 4/5 player for us. Kind of a Sam Reeves kind of player I feel that will eventually be the same type of skill set. Then we've got a shooting guard, 5-9, from Nashville that we're excited about. The other commitment I can't say who, but we're still looking to sign two more. Looking for a point guard to replace Courtney and hopefully we'll get a commitment from another girl soon who we've offered. Early signing ended last week and now we have until April."

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs return to action Thursday night, Nov. 30, as they open GSC play at Delta State. Their next home game is Wednesday, Dec. 6, when they host Eckerd at 5 p.m.
