Lady Bulldogs Sweep Lady Bucs

JACKSON, Tenn.-Host Union swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Saturday afternoon, winning the opener 8-0 and claiming a 7-5 win in the nightcap.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
Union scored a run in the first, three in the third and four in the sixth behind pitcher Hannah Ridolfi, who threw a four-hit shutout.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Union (10-5, 2-3 GSC) scored first in the bottom of the first on a pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt.
• The Lady Bulldogs added three runs to their lead in the third on a single, two doubles and a homer.
• Union ended the game early with a four-run sixth inning, capitalizing on two singles, a homer and a pair of doubles.

KEY STATS:
• Amber Johnson (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) returned to the lineup after missing nine games due to injury, going 2-for-3.
• Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) was 0-for-1 but walked, was hit by a pitch and stole a base.
• Madi Welch went 1-for-3.
• Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) was 1-for-3.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bulldogs batted around in a six-run fourth inning to rally for a 7-5 win over the Lady Bucs (4-11, 0-5).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Bucs struck first with three runs in the top of the first. Johnson and Oyhenart started the game with back-to-back singles to left. After a successful double-steal, Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) drew a one-out walk. Julia Schassburger (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central HS) drove Johnson in when she reached on an error. Alexis Seward (Chino, Calif./Chino HS) brought Oyhenart home with a sacrifice fly, and an error on the play plated Steagall to give the Lady Bucs a 3-0 edge.
• CBU added a run to its lead in the top of the second inning. Olivia Parsels (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) led off with a single. After moving to second on an Abby Ferreira (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus HS) sacrifice, she scored when Johnson reached on an error.
• Union shaved a run off the lead in the bottom of the second with a double and a single.
• UU scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth on four singles and three doubles.
• The Lady Bucs threatened in the top of the seventh. Singles by Ferreira, Johnson and Oyhenart opened the inning with consecutive singles. After Ferreira was out at home on a force play, Steagall singled up the middle to score Johnson, but Oyhenart was tagged out trying to score on the play. Sierra Anderson (Olive Branch, Miss./Lewisburg HS) drew a walk to load the bases with two out, but a fly out ended the game.

KEY STATS:
• Johnson went 4-for-6 with a walk, a stolen base and two runs.
• Oyhenart was 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base.
• Steagall went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run and one RBI.
• Parsels was 1-for-3 with a run.
• Ferreira went 1-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt.
• Seward was 0-for-3 but had a sacrifice fly and two RBI.
• Anderson threw two and two-third scoreless innings of relief, retiring all eight batters she faced with two strikeouts.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs meet Union again Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Their next home game is next Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., when they host No. 19 Alabama Huntsville for a doubleheader.
