Lady Hawks Down CBU in Finale

MEMPHIS-Visiting Shorter scored four runs in three different innings as they claimed a 14-5 win to spoil the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs' Senior Day Saturday at Bland Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Hawks (28-22, 17-15 GSC) jumped out to a quick lead with a four-run first inning, taking advantage of a single, a double, a walk and three errors.
• CBU (6-44, 0-33) halved the deficit in the bottom of the inning. Amber Johnson (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) and Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and Sierra Anderson (Olive Branch, Miss./Lewisburg HS) worked a one-out walk to load the bases. Alexis Seward (Chino, Calif./Chino HS) followed with a two-out two-run single to bring CBU within 4-2.
• Shorter added a run to its lead in the second with a run on a single and a triple.
• The Lady Bucs answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third. Abby Ferreira (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus HS) singled with one out, and Johnson followed with a single. Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) singled, and a throwing error allowed Ferreira to score to bring CBU within 5-3.
• The Lady Hawks scored another run in the fourth on two singles, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly.
• Lauren Provence (Millington, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) celebrated her Senior Day with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the fourth on a 3-2 pitch, bringing CBU within 6-4.
• Shorter blew it open for good with a four-run fifth inning on a Taylor Martin solo homer followed by three more runs on four singles.
• The Lady Hawks tacked on four more in the seventh on five singles.
• The Lady Bucs scored another run in the bottom of the seventh. Johnson singled, moving to second on an error. Sierra Anderson (Olive Branch, Miss./Lewisburg HS) singled to left to bring Johnson home to set the final margin.

KEY STATS:
• Johnson went 4-for-4 with two runs.
• Seward was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
• Ferreira went 2-for-3 with a run.
• Anderson was 1-for-3 with a walk and one RBI.
• Provence went 1-for-3 with a homer, a run and one RBI.
• Oyhenart was 1-for-4 with a run.
• Steagall went 1-for-4.
• Welch was 1-for-4.

SENIOR DAY:
CBU honored its four seniors in pregame ceremonies: Blake Andres (Arlington, Tenn./Briarcrest HS), Lauren Provence (Millington, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS), Alexis Seward (Chino, Calif./Chino HS) and Kylie Steagall (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS).
