Chargers Outslug Lady Bucs

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama-Host Alabama Huntsville scored 27 runs as they claimed a doubleheader sweep over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Saturday.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Chargers (20-6, 10-4 GSC) scored in three of the game's four innings as they rolled to a 13-5 win in the opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Bucs (5-21, 1-13) struck first as they took advantage of three errors in the top of the first. Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) reached on an error, and Amber Johnson (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) followed by reaching on another error. With two out, Olivia Parsels (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) reached on a third error to bring Oyhenart home.
• UAH regained the lead with two in the bottom of the inning on an infield single and a two-run Jada Hayes homer.
• The Chargers blew it open with six in the second on a walk, a single, a double, a triple and a two-run homer by Amber Hammonds.
• CBU shaved a run off the deficit in the top of the fourth. Abby Ferreira (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus HS) doubled to right and moved to third on a Sierra Anderson (Olive Branch, Miss./Lewisburg HS) single, scoring when Ashlyn Hinton (Anniston, Ala./White Plains HS) grounded out.
• UAH added five more in the fourth on a triple, a walk, a single and three doubles.
• The Lady Bucs set the final margin with three in the fifth. Johnson started the inning with a single, moving to second on a passed ball and third on an error when Maddi Welch (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) reached on a fielder's choice. Ferreira singled to score Johnson, and an Anderson double brought Welch home. Hinton scored Ferreira with a groundout.

KEY STATS:
• Ferreira went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and one RBI.
• Anderson was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
• Johnson went 1-for-3 with a run.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Chargers hit four homers and scored in three of the four innings as they won 14-2 in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Chargers scored six in the first on a walk, three doubles, a three-run Kiara Akles homer and a two-run Hammonds homer.
• UAH added six more in the second on three singles, an error, a walk and a two-run Alaina Hampton homer.
• CBU scored twice in the top of the third. Savannah Rosevear-Goetsch (Arrington, Tenn./Fred J. Page HS) and Hinton reached on back-to-back errors to start the inning, and a one-out single by Oyhenart loaded the bases, and a two-run single by Maddi Welch (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) cut the deficit to 12-2.
• The Chargers set the final margin in the fourth with two on a single and a two-run Ashley Cornell homer.

KEY STATS:
• Welch went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
• Rosevear-Goetsch was 1-for-2 with a run.
• Oyhenart went 1-for-3.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Lady Bucs and Chargers meet again Sunday at 1 p.m. Their next home game is set for Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host LeMoyne-Owen for a doubleheader.
