MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs rallied for a 6-5 win over Union in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Bland Field before dropping the second game 7-4.
GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bucs (10-38, 2-30 GSC) scored five runs in their last two times at bat as they rallied from a four-run deficit to win 6-5 in the opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lady Bulldogs (17-30, 8-23) opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first on a two-out single and a double.
• Union extended their lead to four runs with a three-run third when they strung three singles and a double together with one out.
• CBU scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth.
Olivia Parsels (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) worked a leadoff walk. After stealing second, she moved to third on a groundout and scored on a
Jenna Cotter (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS) single up the middle.
• The Lady Bulldogs scored another run in the top of the fifth on a one-out single and a two-out double.
• The Lady Bucs worked their way back into the game with a three-run fifth.
Ashlyn Hinton (Anniston, Ala./White Plains HS) drew a leadoff walk and moved to second when
Holly Oyhenart (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley HS) reached on an error. A bunt single by
Amber Johnson (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) loaded the bases with no outs.
Maddi Welch (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) scored Hinton with a sacrifice fly, and an infield single by Parsels loaded the bases back up for
Sierra Anderson (Olive Branch, Miss./Lewisburg HS), who fouled off five pitches on her way to earning a bases-loaded walk. Cotter pushed Johnson across with a single to left to bring CBU within a 5-4 margin.
• CBU took the lead with a one-out rally in the bottom of the sixth. Oyhenart legged out an infield single, and Johnson reached on an error. Welch blasted a double to the fence in right, giving the Lady Bucs a 6-5 lead.
• Anderson pitched around a leadoff single in the top of the seventh to preserve the win.
KEY STATS:
• Johnson went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases and two runs.
• Cotter was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
• Oyhenart went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs.
• Welch was 1-for-3 with a triple, a sacrifice fly and three RBI.
• Hinton went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and a run.
• Anderson earned the win, allowing one run as she scattered three hits and a walk over four innings.
GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bucs took an early lead, but a five-run third inning lifted Union to a 7-4 win in the second game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• CBU opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first. Oyhenart and Johnson opened the inning with back-to-back singles. A wild throw to first on Johnson's single allowed Oyhenart to score, and Johnson took second on the throw home. After stealing third, Johnson scored on a Welch sacrifice fly.
• The Lady Bulldogs scored a run in the top of the second on a double and two singles.
• Union evened the score in the third with a one-out solo homer to left by Samantha McDaniel.
• The Lady Bulldogs took the lead with a five-run fourth inning, taking advantage of five singles, a walk and an error.
• The Lady Bucs scored a run in the bottom of the fifth. Hinton led off with a single through the right side but was out when Johnson grounded into a force play. A Welch double down the left-field line scored Johnson from first.
• CBU set the final margin with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Parsels led off with a single and, and
Savannah Rosevear-Goetsch (Arrington, Tenn./Fred J. Page HS) reached on a one-out walk. Parsels moved to third on a groundout, scoring on a passed ball.
