Lady Bucs Hit Way to Sweep of Kentucky Wesleyan

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Christian Brothers University softball team combined for 16 runs and 25 hits as it earned a doubleheader sweep of Kentucky Wesleyan, at the UAH Charger Chillout, on Saturday at the Huntsville Sportsplex. The Lady Bucs earned a 5-4 walk-off victory in the opener and led the entire game in an 11-3 victory to close out the day. 

The victory in game one was the first win at CBU for new Head Coach Jordan Bastian. 

The games were the first of the 2020 season for CBU, and the first for new Head Coach, Jordan Bastian. 
  
GAME ONE:  CBU 5 (1-2), KENTUCKY WESLEYAN 4 (0-3)  
 
GAME CHANGER:
- The Lady Bucs found themselves trailing 4-1, in the bottom of the seventh, but plated four runs to win the game. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lady Bucs outhit the Panthers 8-7. Six of the eight CBU hits came in the sixth inning. 
- Three CBU players recorded doubles, including Savannah CrockettMemory Willingham and Elaina McGill. Crockett led CBU with two hits, including the game-winning single.
- Kendall Westbrooks hit her first home run of the season. 
McKenna Rose earned the victory, allowing four runs, on seven hits, with five strikeouts and a walk.

KEY PLAYS:
- The Panthers took a 1-0 lead, in the top of the first, on an RBI groundout. 
- Wesleyan added a pair of runs in the third, scoring on a pair of sacrifice fly's.
- After the Panthers took a 4-0 lead, the Lady Bucs scored their first run of the game, in the sixth, on a sacrifice fly by Bree Brady.   
- CBU started the comeback in the seventh on the home run by Westbrooks.
- Following a double by McGill, the Lady Bucs strung together four straight hits, including three straight RBI singles. 
- Crockett's game-winning single was a sharply hit ball that hopped over the glove of the shortstop. 

NOTABLES:  
- The come from behind win for the Lady Bucs saw them erase their biggest deficit, after the fourth inning, since coming back from down 5-1 to defeat Union, on April 28, 2018.
 
GAME TWO: CBU 11 (2-2), KWC 3 (2-2) 
 
GAME CHANGER:
- The Lady Bucs pounded out 17 hits in the game. All nine starters recorded a hit. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- CBU had a 17-7 edge in hits. 
- The Lady Bucs had four extra base hits, including two doubles by Westbrooks. 
Memory Willingham finished the game 3-for-6, while Westbrooks was 3-for-4. Savannah Crockett, Bree Brady and Caroline Gross finished with two hits apiece. Gross smacked her f
   first career home run in the sixth inning. 
- Mackenzie Puckett did not allow a run in three innings of work. 
Macy Cumming struck out three batters in three innings of relief. 
 
KEY PLAYS:
- The Lady Bucs scored three runs in the first and added three in the second, highlighted by Brady's two RBI double. 
- With CBU leading 8-0, in the fifth, Wesleyan scored its first runs of the game, when it put up a three spot. 
- The Lady Bucs made it 9-3, in the sixth, on the home run by Gross and added runs in the sixth and seventh on a double by Dyer and a sac fly by Crockett.

UP NEXT:
The Lady Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, Feb. 8 when they travel to Arkadelphia, Ark., for the Henderson State/Ouachita Baptist Tournament. The Lady Bucs are set to start the day with Ouachita Baptist at 10 a.m.
