GULF SHORES, Ala. - The Christian Brothers University softball team dropped a pair of contests on the opening day of the 2022 season, on Friday at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. The Lady Bucs fell 6-1 to Barry in the opener, before dropping a 5-4 decision to Nova Southeastern to finish the day.
Nova Southeastern managed to push accross the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win.
GAME ONE: Barry 6 (1-0) CBU 1 (0-1)
GAME CHANGER:
Barry scored in each of the first four innings, including a pair in the second and fourth innings.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
Barry finished with a 9-2 advantage in hits.
Both CBU hits were doubles.
CBU committed three errors.
Kendall Westbrooks and
RJ Simpson had the CBU hits. Simpson drove in the lone run in her collegiate debut.
CBU starting pitcher
Macy Cumming allowed six runs, four earned, on seven hits in 3.1 innings.
In her collegiate debut, relief pitcher
Olivia Renta allowed just two hits in 3.2 innings of relief.
KEY PLAYS:
Barry scored a single run in the first and third innings, and a pair in the second and fourth.
CBU plated its lone run of the contest in the fourth after back-to-back doubles by Westbrooks and Simpson.
The teams combined for just two hits the rest of the way.
GAME TWO: Nova Southeastern 5 (1-1) CBU 4 (0-2)
GAME CHANGER:
The Sharks erased a 4-1 lead to pick up the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
Both teams finished with six hits apiece.
Three CBU hits were doubles.
Elaina McGill finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
Memory Willingham and
Caroline Gross drove in the other CBU runs.
Simpson added her second double of the day.
Mackenzie Puckett pitched a complete game, allowing three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and four walks.
KEY PLAYS:
The RBI double by Willingham gave CBU a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
NSU took advantage of an error to tie the game in the second.
The Lady Bucs scored three in the fourth on a sac fly by Gross and a two RBI double by McGill.
NSU answered in the bottom of the fifth using a two RBI double and a run scoring single.
The Lady Bucs earned three straight walks to load the bases, in the sixth, but a groundout ended the threat.
In the seventh, after the leadoff batter reached on an error, Puckett forced back-to-back groundouts.
After a pair of walks, and a wild pitch the Nicole Hayslip drew a walk to bring home the winning run.
UP NEXT:
The Lady Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Sunday, Feb. 6 when they face Alabama Huntsville (non-conference) and Spring Hill. First pitch against the Chargers is scheduled for 1:30 PM.
