Lady Bucs Come up Short at Union Volleyball Classic

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Christian Brothers University volleyball team dropped a pair of close contests, on Friday, at the Union Invite. The Lady Bucs fell 3-0 to Northwestern Oklahoma State, before dropping a hard fought 3-2 decision to Henderson State to close out the night. 

FINAL SCORE | GAME ONE :
NWOSU 3 (6-3), CBU 0 (1-4) (25-21, 25-15, 25-23)

WHAT HAPPENED:
The Rangers hit .255 and forced 18 CBU errors. 


HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In a tightly played first set, neither team led by more than four points. Despite just one error, by CBU, the Rangers scored four of the final five points to take a 1-0 lead. 
  • After CBU took an 8-6 lead, the Rangers used a 12-4 spurt to take control of the set. Northwestern Oklahoma then scored five straight to take the set. 
  • CBU led for a majority of the third set, before the Rangers reeled off four straight points to take a 20-19 lead. 
  • With the scored tied at 22, Northwestern Oklahoma scored three of the next four points to earn the win. 
KEY STATS:
  • Maddi Rowley led the Lady Bucs with 14 kills. 
  • Tia Rizvi added a double-double with 29 assists and 12 digs. 
  • The 18 errors were tied for second-fewest this season. 
FINAL SCORE | GAME TWO: 
HSU 3 (6-6), CBU 2 (1-5) (25-13, 23-25, 25-16, 20-25, 15-12)

WHAT HAPPENED:
Henderson State had its defense finish with 111 digs, while holding CBU to just a .098 hitting percentage. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The first set was all HSU, as it finished with 13 kills and just four errors.  
  • CBU had a match high 14 kills, and held on to win a tightly contested set. 
  • Henderson State raced out to an 8-2 lead and held on to win the set. 
  • CBU used 11 kills to force a fifth and deciding set. 
  • After trailing 6-0, CBU fought back to cut the lead to 8-7. 
  • Leading 11-9, HSU finished the match by scoring four of the final seven points. 
KEY STATS:
  • With the setback, CBU fell to 0-2 in five set contests. 
  • Maysen Bruschke led CBU with a career-high 15 kills and 20 digs. 
  • Tia Rizvi finished with 36 assists, while tying a career-high with five blocks. 
UP NEXT
The Lady Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 13, when they travel to Clinton, Miss., to open Gulf South Conference play against Mississippi College. First serve is set for 6 PM.
