Lady Bucs Win Five Set Thriller Over West Alabama

MEMPHIS - The Christian Brothers University volleyball team earned a thrilling five set victory over West Alabama, in Gulf South Conference action, on Thursday night, at Canale Arena.  

FINAL SCORE:
CBU 3 (3-9, 2-4 GSC) UWA 2 (5-13, 0-6 GSC), (25-23, 20-25, 25-15, 25-17, 15-13)

WHAT HAPPENED:
The Lady Bucs hit .206, and saw their defense scoop 75 digs in the win. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Neither team lead by more than three points, until the Lady Bucs used a 7-1 run to take an 18-13 lead. UWA fought off four set points before an error helped give CBU the opening set win. 
  • After CBU tied the set at three, the Tigers never trailed and even the match at 1-1. 
  • The Lady Bucs dominated the third set, hitting .444 and committing just four errors in the 25-15 win. CBU had a match-high 16 kills in the set. 
  • UWA fought back in the fourth, using 13 kills and just two errors to force a deciding set. 
  • CBU raced out to a 4-1 lead in the deciding set, before the visitors fought back tot tie the score at nine. 
  • With the score tied at 12, CBU used a kill Rebecca King, and two from Calah Jackson to help secure the win. Both teams had seven kills and three errors in the fifth set.  

KEY STATS | NOTEABLES:
Maddi Rowley led the Lady Bucs with a match-high 15 kills. The freshman also pitched in 13 digs. 
Kimmy Hammond led CBU with a season-high 21 digs. 
Tia Rizvi added 24 assists, 16 digs and a season high eight kills.
Calah Jackson and Madison Spiva added nine kills each.  
The .206 hitting percentage, and 75 digs are the second-best totals of the year for CBU. 
The five set win was the first of the season for the Lady Bucs. The last five set win for CBU came last season against Lee (11.12)

UP NEXT
CBU is set to return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 4 when they host in-state rivals Union. First serve is set for 6 PM.
