JACKSON, Tenn. - The Christian Brothers University softball team dropped a pair of closely contested contests to Union, on Saturday afternoon, at Fresmire Field. Union held on for a 6-2 win in the opener and used a late rally for a 4-3 victory in game two.
GAME ONE: UU 6 (16-13, 9-5 GSC) CBU 1 (6-20, 1-12 GSC)
GAME CHANGER:
Union starting pitcher Riley Vaughn struck out 13 CBU batters in the contest.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lady Bucs were outhit 10-3.
- Caroline Gross was 1-4 with a home run.
- Elaina McGill had an RBI single.
- Union scored in five of six innings.
KEY PLAYS:
The hosts scored a pair in the first on an RBI single.
With Union leading 4-0, in the fourth, Gross homered to get CBU on the board.
The Bulldogs answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth.
An RBI single by McGill cut the deficit to 5-2, in the fifth.
Union added a run in the sixth to finish the scoring.
GAME TWO: UU 4 (17-13, 10-5 GSC) CBU 3 (6-21, 1-13 GSC)
GAME CHANGER:
After a three-run home run by
Riley Simpson gave CBU a 3-2 lead, going into the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs scored a pair to win it.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lady Bucs finished with an 8-7 advantage in hits.
- Savannah Crocket finished 2-3.
- Simpson was 1-2 with a 3-run home run.
- Ashlynn Smith and Caroline Gross had doubles.
KEY PLAYS:
After three scoreless innings, Union got on the board with an RBI single.
With the Bulldogs leading 2-0, and CBU down to its final out two straight hits led to Simpson's heroics.
Following the home run, the double by Smith gave CBU another runner in scoring position, but a pop up ended the threat.
After a walk and a stolen base, an RBI double tied the game at three.
A sacrifice bunt put the winning run on third, and Zoey Neal then executed a bunt to score the winning run.

The Lady Bucs are scheduled to return to action on Sunday, March 26, when they wrap up their series at Union. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM.
