Christian Brothers forces a fourth set in defeat to West Florida

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In spite of a tough 3-1 defeat to a top conference opponent, Christian Brothers University (6-15,2-9 GSC) showcased moments of brilliance against the University of West Florida (16-5,11-0 GSC) in a thrilling matchup at Canale Arena on Friday night. Though UWF came out on top with set scores of 25-11, 25-15, 20-25, and 25-14, CBU proved they could challenge one of the Gulf South Conference's best teams, especially with an inspiring third-set win.

Match Highlights

First Set (UWF 25-11 CBU)

While UWF opened with a dominant first set, CBU displayed flashes of strong play and learned quickly how to counter UWF's attack. The Bucs tallied four kills but also encountered challenges due to UWF's service aces and quick offense. CBU's defense began finding answers in the latter part of the set, setting the stage for their improving play in later sets.

Second Set (UWF 25-15 CBU)

CBU continued to grow in the second set, as their attacking efficiency improved with a .115 hitting percentage, with nine kills led by Jordan Allen. Setter Sarah Allyn Thornell orchestrated the attack well, moving the ball to create favorable hitting angles. As they warmed up to UWF's rhythm, CBU built momentum and began to limit UWF's control over the game.

Third Set (CBU 25-20 UWF)

The third set was a triumph for CBU as they capitalized on UWF's errors and took control, winning 25-20. The Lady Buccaneers' defense and strategic placement were essential in this set, as they achieved 13 ties and 10 lead changes to keep the pressure on UWF. Thornell's intelligent sets allowed Allen, Calah Jackson, and Addison Waggoner to shine offensively. CBU's resilience and tenacity were evident as they frustrated UWF with well-placed serves and key blocks, proving their ability to contend with one of the conference's top teams.

Fourth Set (UWF 25-14 CBU)

In the final set, CBU continued to battle hard, with defensive efforts spearheaded by Thornell and libero Sofia Rathheim-Hilton.
