Christian Brothers builds momentum with each set in defeat to Mississippi College

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Christian Brothers volleyball team picked up momentum in each set against a strong Mississippi College squad in a Gulf South Conference showdown at Canale Arena on Friday night. In spite of the 3-0 defeat (11-25, 14-25, 21-25), the Lady Bucs showcased their ability to fight even when the odds are stacked against them.

Match Highlights:

  • Offensive Growth:
    The Lady Bucs saved their best performance for the final set, hitting an impressive .302. The team's determination to adjust and execute under pressure demonstrates their willingness to compete in any circumstance.
  • Standout Performances:
    • Addison Waggoner delivered an excellent all-around game, leading the team with 10 kills and contributing a block assist for 10.5 total points.
    • Ella Schumacher matched Waggoner with 10 kills and showcased her attacking consistency with a .189 hitting percentage.
    • Sarah Allyn Thornell played a pivotal role in facilitating the offense, racking up 24 assists and keeping the attack dynamic.
    • Aileen Zavala anchored the defense with a team-high 12 digs, demonstrating her reliability in high-pressure moments.
  • Team Defense:
    CBU showcased strong defensive efforts, combining for 47 digs and making critical blocks at the net. Tia Rizvi added to the defensive stand with three block assists and nine digs.

Set Highlights:

  1. Set 1 (11-25):
    While the Bucs got off to a slow start, players like Schumacher and Jordan Allen managed to spark moments of brilliance with kills. The team stayed committed to finding their rhythm against a formidable opponent.
  2. Set 2 (14-25):
    The Lady Bucs began to find their footing, highlighted by a service ace from Sarah Bandi and a series of well-placed kills by Waggoner. Defensive efforts also improved, with Zavala and Rizvi making key plays to extend rallies.
  3. Set 3 (21-25):
    The Lady Bucs delivered their strongest showing in the final set, led by Waggoner, Schumacher, and Thornell. They kept the set tight and pushed Mississippi College to earn every point, underscoring the team's never-give-up mentality.
