CBU defeated by Trevecca Nazarane in season finale

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Christian Brothers University women's soccer demonstrated growth and determination in a challenging match against Trevecca Nazarene on Sunday afternoon at Signaigo Field, ultimately falling 2-0 in a game that showcased both the team's defensive strengths and areas for offensive development. This conference clash, held in front of a supportive home crowd, was a test of CBU's resilience, as they faced a seasoned Trevecca team that came into the game with a 4-8-3 record.

Gemma Crowe, Nina Mueller, Cammie Jernigan, Mia Aviles, Lia Kahel and Hedda Isaksson were all honored before the match as part of the Senior Day festivities. The injured Kahel was afforded a ceremonial first kick at the beginning of the game.

Defensive Resilience and Key Performers

Defensively, the Lady Bucs held their ground and showed substantial improvement in organization and tenacity. Goalkeeper Gemma Crowe stood out as a reliable last line of defense, making four critical saves to keep the game within reach. Crowe's performance was especially commendable given Trevecca's 12-shot tally, with six of those on target. Her presence in goal, combined with effective communication with defenders, allowed CBU to thwart multiple scoring opportunities.

CBU's defensive line, anchored by players like Lia Haggstrom, Elisa Cruz, and Mack Campbell, was well-coordinated, particularly in containing Trevecca's speedy forwards and minimizing direct goal threats. Defender Chloe May and Cammie Jernigan also contributed with key interceptions and challenges, forcing Trevecca to work harder for clear opportunities. These players demonstrated real cohesion.

Offensive Efforts and Near Breakthroughs

Though Christian Brothers struggled to convert their offensive efforts into goals, the team made strides in pushing forward and creating chances. Midfielder Alyssa Costley and forward Alexa Franklin showed an attacking mindset, frequently looking to drive the ball forward and open up space in Trevecca's half. Franklin was inches away from scoring with a shot that struck the top woodwork, a moment that electrified the crowd and reflected CBU's potential to capitalize on half-chances. Costley, known for her versatility, attempted to find gaps in Trevecca's formation, adding pressure from the midfield.

Another notable player, Cristal Tellez, provided energy and creativity up front. Although CBU only managed four shots—two in each half—they were tactically seeking to exploit weaknesses in Trevecca's defensive setup. Tellez and Costley worked well together to distribute the ball and apply pressure, and the midfield partnership shows promise for generating more consistent offensive threats in upcoming games.

Crowd Support and Team Morale

The Christian Brothers supporters played an essential role, bringing energy and encouragement to the team. Their presence and vocal support seemed to inspire the players, particularly during defensive stands and Franklin's near-goal moment. The players fed off this energy, showing resilience and determination even as Trevecca built a two-goal lead.

Looking Ahead

Christian Brothers University women's soccer faced a ton of adversity during the 2024 campaign. Inclement weather significantly disrupted the first half of the season and a slew of untimely injuries made each week more difficult than the last. Nevertheless, CBU persevered through it all and earned a draw against the fourth-best team in the conference, Lee, in the final week of the season. The struggles bonded and afforded experience to a young roster that will surely be ready for whatever next season brings.
