CBU falls to Mississippi College despite strong effort through three quarters

CLINTON, Miss. – Christian Brothers University women's basketball (0-18, 0-13 GSC) faced Mississippi College (10-9, 6-7 GSC) in a challenging matchup that ended in a 75-51 defeat for CBU at the A.E. Wood Coliseum on Saturday. The Lady Bucs were highly competitive through the first three quarters before the Choctaws pulled away in the fourth.

First Quarter: Back-and-Forth Start

The game began with a competitive exchange as both teams found ways to score. CBU's Jada Hood opened with a strong presence, scoring a second-chance layup early on. Nyapar Mathot added to CBU's offense with a layup off a turnover, giving them their largest lead at 4-2. However, Mississippi College countered with steady shooting from Alexis Rowe and Amelia Bell, leaving the score tied 14-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Second Quarter: Mississippi College Builds Momentum

CBU struggled to convert opportunities in the second quarter, shooting just 36.4 percent from the field. Mississippi College capitalized with a 10-0 scoring run, fueled by a three-pointer from Tiara Abron and layups from Bell. Jada Hood managed to break the drought with a mid-range jumper, but CBU ended the half trailing 28-23.

Third Quarter: CBU Fights Back

The third quarter saw CBU's most determined offensive effort. They engineered an 8-0 run midway through the period, highlighted by Lamonnie Ownes' pair of three-pointers. Jada Hood remained consistent, attacking the paint for crucial free throws. Despite the effort, Mississippi College's dominance at the charity stripe (14-17 FT in the quarter) prevented CBU from closing the gap entirely. The quarter ended with Mississippi College holding a 46-42 advantage.

Fourth Quarter: Mississippi College Pulls Away

Mississippi College erupted for a game-deciding 29-point fourth quarter, their highest-scoring period. Rowe and Bell were instrumental, combining for several fast-break points and efficient shooting. CBU struggled defensively, allowing multiple second-chance opportunities. Offensively, CBU failed to regain rhythm, shooting 28.6 percent from the field in the quarter. Mississippi College secured their largest lead of 24 points in the final moments.

Key Performances:
  • Jada Hood: Led the team with 17 points, going 9-of-10 from the free-throw line. Hood was a constant presence in the paint, drawing fouls and finishing strong.
  • Nyapar Mathot: Contributed 11 points and seven rebounds, showcasing effort on both ends of the court.
Next Up
