Christian Brothers Track & Field Shines Across the South: A Weekend of Breakthroughs and Personal Records

In a meet that brought together athletes from conferences scattered across the South—from the Appalachian to the Sun Belt, from Division I powers to Independent standouts—the Christian Brothers University Bucs carved out a story of grit, momentum, and personal triumphs.

It wasn't a meet the Bucs entered as favorites, but it quickly became one where they left a mark.

MEN'S TEAM: A WEEKEND OF STATEMENT PERFORMANCES

Speed on Display

The day opened with the 60-meter prelims. Senior Jordan Jarrett led the Bucs' sprinters, clocking a swift 7.37, setting a season record and punching through with confidence. His teammate, senior Leburu Leburu, fought through the heat with a personal record of 7.80, showing the depth of CBU's sprint squad.

Jarrett wasn't done, he returned in the 200 meters, where he finished in 23.14, again a season best. Behind him, a trio of Bucs pushed through the curve-heavy race: sophomore Davion Jones (23.99), freshman Terrial Griffin (24.78), and Leburu (25.43), two of the three setting personal bests.

Mid-Distance Momentum

Freshman Yannick Daude stepped into the 400 meters and delivered a huge breakthrough, 51.58, a personal record that foreshadowed a strong season ahead.

In the 800 meters, junior Kylon Higgins raced with poise, surging late to finish 2:02.71, another personal best.

Distance Dominance

The Bucs' distance runners stole the spotlight.

Junior Kilian Daude unleashed one of the most composed miles of his career, surging past competitors to take 4th with 4:22.16, his best ever. Freshman Keelin Tyler followed with a strong 4:51.04, another PR.

Then came the 3000 meters, where CBU produced perhaps the highlight of the entire meet.

Junior Basile Chevrel stormed to victory in 8:36.22, pulling away from the field with a relentless final kilometer. Teammate James Holcombe wasn't far behind, running a season-best 9:00.76 to claim a top-15 finish. Senior Joseph Arriaga was forced to withdraw before the start, but his teammates carried the mantle well.

WOMEN'S TEAM: RISING TALENT AND RECORD-BREAKING PERFORMANCES

Sprinting Success

In the women's 60 meters, three Bucs set personal or season bests within a single heat. Senior Jackelin Ruiz clocked 8.64, edging out senior Micaiah Halliburton (8.69) and sophomore Denise Brouwer (8.75), each performance building momentum toward postseason competition.

The 200 meters continued the trend: senior Gioia Scopel led the group in 28.09, while Halliburton secured another season best with 28.77.

Middle Distance Grit

Junior Laura De Llano ran with fierce control in the 800 meters, earning a season best of 2:27.81. While freshman Elen Skar stepped off the track early and senior Danielle Booker did not start, De Llano kept the Bucs firmly in the mix.

The women's mile became one of the most exciting races of the day for CBU. Three athletes, each from a different class year, landed in the top eight, all with personal records:

  • Phoebe Steel (FR) – 5:20.70 (3rd place)

  • Kaley Byrd (FR) – 5:29.47 (5th place)

  • Annaggeliki Zannetou (JR) – 5:35.05 (8th place)

Their performances echoed the program's future: young talent rising fast.

Distance and Field Standouts

Sophomore Lauren Blyth stormed to a 10:49.73 finish in the 3000 meters, smashing her personal best and placing 6th overall.

In the field events, senior Gioia Scopel returned for the high jump, clearing 1.50m, a season best. Meanwhile, in the long jump, Denise Brouwer (4.79m) and Jackelin Ruiz (4.45m) both soared to new personal records.

A TEAM GROWING IN DEPTH AND CONFIDENCE

Across sprints, distance, and field events, Christian Brothers produced an impressive 20+ personal or season records, a statement that the program is quickly leveling up across all disciplines.

As they prepare for tougher competition ahead, one thing is clear:
The Bucs are building something special, one PR at a time.
