Women’s Basketball holds off Valdosta State for first win of the season

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Christian Brothers University women's basketball team secured its first victory of the season in dramatic fashion, holding off Valdosta State 53-48 on Monday afternoon at Canale Arena.

The Lady Buccaneers (1-24, 1-19 GSC) built an early 18-point lead in the first quarter but had to withstand a fierce second-half rally from the Blazers (15-11, 10-10 GSC) to break into the win column for the first time this season.

Strong Start Sets the Tone

Christian Brothers came out firing, shooting a scorching 69.2 percent from the field in the first quarter, including a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. Their suffocating defense held Valdosta State to just eight points in the opening frame, helping the Lady Bucs race out to a commanding 24-8 lead by the end of the period.

Guard Jada Hood sparked the hot start, tallying eight points in the quarter, including a pair of three-pointers. Valencia McFall also played a pivotal role, knocking down two three-pointers and finishing the quarter with eight points of her own.

However, after such an explosive start, Christian Brothers struggled offensively in the second quarter, managing just three points on 3-of-6 shooting from the charity stripe as Valdosta State clawed its way back into the contest. The Blazers capitalized on their defensive intensity, forcing turnovers and holding the Lady Bucs scoreless for long stretches, narrowing the deficit to just 27-23 at halftime.

Back-and-Forth Battle in the Second Half

The third quarter saw Valdosta State continue to close the gap, as they briefly took their first lead of the game at the 5:03 mark, 35-34, on a layup by Kenya Edelhart. However, the Lady Bucs responded with timely shots from Chloe Crawford and Nyapar Mathot to reclaim the lead heading into the final quarter, 38-35.

The fourth quarter was a tense affair with multiple lead changes and momentum swings. A three-pointer by SeQuoia Carroll tied the game at 41-41 with 8:14 remaining. Moments later, Hood converted a crucial layup off a turnover to put Christian Brothers ahead for good. From there, the Lady Bucs managed to hold on down the stretch, sealing the win with critical defensive stops and clutch free throws from Carroll in the final seconds.

Key Performers

Carroll and Hood led CBU in scoring with 13 points apiece. Both contributed on the boards too with nine and five rebounds, respectively. McFall added 12 points, fueling the early momentum that paid off in the end.

The Lady Bucs forced an impressive 24 turnovers, turning them into 19 difference-making points. They also defended the perimeter well, limiting Valdosta to 4-of-20 shooting from beyond the arc.

Looking Ahead

With the long-awaited first win under their belt, Christian Brothers will look to build momentum as they prepare for their next matchup. The Lady Bucs will head to Lee on Thursday night, hoping to carry the energy from this victory into the final stretch of the season.
