MEMPHIS, TN. – Christian Brothers University opened Gulf South Conference play Friday evening at Canale Arena, falling to Alabama Huntsville in straight sets, 25-20, 25-16, 25-9. The loss moved the Buccaneers to 4-8 overall and 0-1 in GSC play, while UAH improved to 9-1 and 1-0 in conference action.
CBU showed its best fight in the opening set. After falling behind 13-6, the Bucs put together a strong run behind Carleiny Morillo's serving, cutting the deficit to 13-12. CBU kept fighting late, with kills from Addison Waggoner and Alma Solis, before UAH closed out the set, 25-20.
Waggoner led the CBU attack with six kills and no attacking errors, hitting .214 while adding a block. Alana Martinez finished with five kills, while Sarah Helms added three kills, six digs and two solo blocks. Defensively, Sophia Nowacki led all Buccaneers with 19 digs, while Morillo recorded 12 digs, seven assists and all three of CBU's service aces.
UAH finished the match with a .271 hitting percentage and 42 kills, compared with 22 kills for the Bucs. CBU finished with 58 digs and four total blocks.
The Buccaneers will look to regroup as they continue Gulf South Conference play.
