In-Sik Hwang is in his 18th season at CBU, where he holds the school record for career wins.
A two-time GSC Coach of the Year, in 2010 and 2012, he has led CBU to winning records in nine of his 17 years as CBU volleyball head coach. He led CBU to the NCAA Tournament in 2011 and 2012, the first South Regional appearances for CBU since joining the NCAA. In 2012, his Lady Bucs upended third-seeded West Florida to reach the South Regional semifinals for the first time.
The 2012 team went 21-13, finishing second in the GSC, their highest finish since joining the league, while the 2011 squad was 24-11 and finished third in the league.
His 2008 team posted a 25-10 record, including a third-place finish with an 8-4 GSC West mark. Their 25 wins were CBU's most since the 1995 team went 34-12 in CBU's final full year in the NAIA.
Hwang has coached 33Â All-GSC players, 11 Academic All-GSC players and three AVCA All-South Region players. He has also coached three GSC Freshman of the Year winners, including a pair of AVCA All-South Region Freshman of the Year winners. The 2006 Lady Bucs placed their entire roster on the GSC Fall Academic Honor Roll, the only GSC team in any sport to achieve that honor.
Laura Washington joined a short list in the GSC record books that year, becoming the 17th three-time First-Team All-GSC selection as well as the 33rd two-time Academic All-GSC pick. She earned All-GSC honors all four years as she set CBU single-season and career records for attack percentage, kills, and blocks. She also finished in the top 10 in the GSC record books in career kills, blocks, attack percentage, matches with double-digit kills, matches with double-digit blocks, and matches with 20 or more kills.
The Lady Bucs went 21-13 in 2012, recording the longest postseason run since CBU joined the NCAA. The team competed in the GSC Finals and made their way to the NCAA South Regional Semifinals.
Hwang arrived at CBU in 2002 with more than 10 years coaching experience on the collegiate, club and high school levels. In 2001, he was the head coach at LaVergne High School and guided the team to a district and regional championship in his third season. He also earned District 9 Coach of the Year Awards in 2000 and 2001.
He graduated with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1998 from Middle Tennessee State University. He served as an assistant volleyball coach (1993-1996) and as an instructor at MTSU (1995-1996). Hwang coached at Franklin High School in 1998 and was named the District 11-L Coach of the Year.
Hwang is a member of USA Volleyball and the American Volleyball Coaches Association and is licensed by the USA Coaching Accreditation Program, certified both Level I and II. He has also been Leader level certified in the American Coaching Effectiveness Program.
