Lashaunda Spurgeon | Head Volleyball Coach
Lashaunda Spurgeon enters her second season as head coach of the Christian Brothers University volleyball program in 2026, after leading the Buccaneers to a postseason appearance during her first year in Memphis.
Spurgeon took over the program in March 2025 and quickly helped change its direction. Picked to finish last in the Gulf South Conference, CBU instead earned its first postseason appearance in more than eight years and finished the 2025 campaign 15-18 overall and 9-11 in GSC play.
The Buccaneers were at their best down the stretch. CBU won its final six matches of the regular season, including a 3-0 victory over a UAH team that entered the match 22-5 overall and 14-4 in conference play. The Bucs then defeated Valdosta State 3-0 in the opening round of the GSC Championship Tournament before taking UAH to five sets in the tournament quarterfinals. CBU's postseason run ended with a 3-2 loss after the Buccaneers captured the opening two sets.
Before CBU, Spurgeon spent two seasons as the head men's and women's volleyball coach at Talladega College. She led the women's program to back-to-back NAIA National Tournament appearances in 2023 and 2024. Her 2023 team went 31-9 overall and 15-1 in conference play, setting a school record for victories while capturing the program's first volleyball championship with both the GCAC regular-season and tournament titles. She was named the 2023 GCAC Coach of the Year and AVCA Southeast Region Coach of the Year.
Spurgeon previously compiled a 59-20 record at Dillard University, where she earned GCAC Coach of the Year honors in Spring 2021. Her coaching career has also included stops at Vernon College and Fayetteville State University. While at Fayetteville State, she was part of a staff that captured the 2019 CIAA Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament. Spurgeon entered CBU with a 137-74 career head-coaching record and had already surpassed 100 career victories.
A native of Albertville, Alabama, Spurgeon was a multi-sport athlete before beginning her coaching career. She won the SIAC Women's Javelin Championship in both 2011 and 2012 and was inducted into the Stillman College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2024.
Spurgeon earned her bachelor's degree in Health and Physical Education from Stillman College and a master's degree in Sports Administration with a concentration in Educational Leadership from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
