Buccaneers Capture Memphis Cup

Sophomore forward Mariano Ilari had two goals in the Cup.
Memphis, TN. - Sophomore forward Mariano Ilari scored two goals and junior defender Nick Chantara was named Tournament MVP and the Christian Brothers University Buccaneers defeated the University of Memphis in the finals of the Memphis Cup this past weekend.

Along with CBU, Rhodes, Lambuth and the University of Memphis participated in the one-day 11 on 11 tournament.

The Bucs faced off with Rhodes in their first game and defeated the Lynx 3-1. Alan Whittington, Ilari, and Ricky Biven had the goals.

CBU then met Memphis in the finals after the Tigers defeated Lambuth 7-0 in their first-round match. The Bucs, behind stellar goalkeeping from sophomore keeper Chad Rounder, shutout the Tigers 1-0 in the final match. Ilari had the lone goal for CBU.

Junior defender Egill Thorolfsson said the team was very solid in both games.

"We played very well," he said. "Chad (Rounder) was great in goal and our defense as a whole was very tough. We always have a big rivalry with Memphis and to shut them down like we did is not only good for the team, but a great start for our new coach."
