Bucs Take Tim McCage Cup

March 26, 2007

MEMPHIS--The Christian Brothers University Bucs defeated Lambuth and Memphis to win the 2007 Tim McCage Cup Saturday.

The Bucs defeated Lambuth 3-0 Saturday morning in the semifinals of the tournament. Zach Tubinis (Memphis, Tenn./Houston HS) scored the game-winner for the Bucs, and Andy Vrbicek (Barrington, Ill./Jefferson City HS) and Joshua Menard (Lafayette, La./Lafayette HS) added goals to provide the final margin.

Daniel Foster (Gallatin, Tenn./Gallatin HS), who missed all but the first three minutes of the 2006 season with an injury, posted a shutout in goal against Lambuth and followed that with another strong performance as the Bucs defeated Memphis in penalty kicks.

The Tigers' Shaun Golding scored the championship game's first goal, and CBU All-American Matt Werakso (Wollongong, Australia) tied it in the 65th minute. The score remained 1-1 through the end of regulation and two 10-minute periods of golden goal.

With the score tied at 1 after 110 minutes, the game went to penalty kicks. The first four players on each side successfully converted. Memphis's fifth PK missed, while Werakso scored the game-winning PK. Ryan Peel (Mission, B.C./Hatzic Secondary), Craig De Melo (Langley, B.C./Langley Secondary), Adam Raborn (Baton Rouge, La./Robert E. Lee HS), Ryan Heine (New Orleans, La./Brother Martin HS), and Werakso all converted penalty kicks.

Peel was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, as CBU captured the title for the second time in four years. CBU won it in 2004, while Memphis won the tournament in 2005 and 2006.
