JACKSON, Tenn.—Host Union swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Wednesday night, winning the first game 6-5 and taking the nightcap 8-0.
In the opener, the Lady Bulldogs (4-2) scored first on a pair of two-out RBI singles in the first inning. The Lady Bucs (2-2) knotted the game when RBI singles from
Kallie McFatter (Mansfield, Texas/Summit HS) and
Alyse Brewer (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) drove in
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS), who hit a leadoff double, and
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS), who reached on an error.
The decisive blow came in the bottom of the fifth, when Sydney McMillin hit a three-run homer, giving her four RBI for the game. The Lady Bucs shaved two runs off the lead in the top of the sixth inning after a leadoff double from Nelson. McFatter drove her in with a single to right-center, and she eventually scored on a
Michelle Paul (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Summit HS) single.
Brittany Burkett homered to start the bottom of the sixth, and the Lady Bucs could only score once in the seventh, as
Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) scored as Nelson reached when she grounded into a force play. After a McFatter single, the tying run was stranded on second to end the game.
McFatter went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI to pace the Lady Bucs' offense. King went 2-for-3, while Nelson scored two runs.
In the nightcap, the Lady Bucs struggled to score against McMillin, who threw a two-hit shutout as she retired 15 of CBU's 18 hitters. She got all the run support she needed in the first inning as Ali Thomas hit a two-run homer. UU tacked on two more in the second, a run in the third, and three in the fourth as they rolled to the 8-0 victory.
McFatter and
Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) collected CBU's only hits in the nightcap, while
Brooke Davis (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) also drew a walk.
The Lady Bucs return home Sunday afternoon as they host a doubleheader against Lambuth. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
