MEMPHIS—Christian Brothers University sophomore outfielder
Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas, Mansfield Timberview HS) tied an NCAA Division II record with three triples in the first game of the Lady Bucs' doubleheader with Williams Baptist.
The Lady Bucs (5-3) won the opener 5-4, but they dropped the nightcap 7-4.
After the Lady Eagles (1-1) scored one in the top of the first, Mathews led off the bottom of the inning with a triple to the gap in left-center. She scored when
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) hit a two-out triple to right-center, tying the game.
An inning later,
Brooke Davis (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) singled and moved to third on a
Michelle Paul (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Summit HS) double. With two out, Mathews hit a triple down the right field line and scored on an error as she escaped a rundown between third and home, putting the Lady Bucs ahead 4-1. She tied the record in the fifth inning as she lined a leadoff triple over the right fielder's head, but she was unable to score.
The Lady Eagles had tied it by then, scoring one run in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to tie the game.
The Lady Bucs, however, answered in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.
Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) led off with a single, and she moved to second on a
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) single. After Nelson's groundout moved the runners to second and third, Ambers scored on a wild pitch to end the game and give the Lady Bucs the 5-4 win.
King finished the game 2-for-4.
Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) earned the win, improving to 4-1 as she allowed three runs on four hits and three walks, striking out four.
In the nightcap, the Lady Bucs appeared in control after a three-run first inning, loading the bases on two singles and a walk and scoring on a walk and a two-run
Brooke Davis (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) double.
But the Lady Eagles answered in the second, sending 10 to the plate as they turned three walks, three hits, and an error into four runs, retaking a lead they would never relinquish. They scored a pair in the third on three straight doubles, and they extended the lead to 7-3 with another run in the fourth.
Ambers drove in the Lady Bucs' final run with a two-out single in the fourth, scoring Paul, but Dunn was tagged out trying to score from second on the play.
WBC pitcher April McCampbell retired nine of the Lady Bucs' final 10 batters to notch the victory.
Ambers went 2-for-4 in the second game, while Davis was 2-for-3.
Mathews became the ninth player in NCAA Division II history to hit three triples in a game, and she also tied Delta State's Brittany Tillery for the GSC record.
The Lady Bucs are back in action Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they visit Bethel. Their next home game is set for Thursday, March 12, as they host Blackburn in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
