McKENZIE, Tenn.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split a non-conference doubleheader at Bethel Friday afternoon, dropping a 4-3 nailbiter in the opener before winning the nightcap 3-0.
The Lady Bucs (6-4) scored first in the opener, with
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) scoring on an error after a two-out double in the top of the first.
The Lady Wildcats (6-2) answered over the next two innings. A four-hit inning brought two home in the second, and a two-run single from pitcher Blaire Johnson in the third inning gave Bethel a 4-1 lead.
The Lady Bucs used back-to-back doubles by
Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) and
Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) to score twice in the fifth inning, but Johnson retired the final eight Lady Bucs to preserve the victory. Mathews went 2-for-3 in the game for the Lady Bucs, while King and Dunn added their other two hits.
Dunn allowed less suspense in the nightcap, picking up her first shutout of the season as she improved to 5-1. She received all the help she needed in the fourth inning as they scored three runs on five singles.
Mathews excelled again in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 as she raised her batting average to .469.
Dunn scattered six hits and five walks, and she struck out eight in the shutout. She also tossed two scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts in the first game.
The Lady Bucs' trip to Freed-Hardeman Saturday afternoon has been rained out. They will return to the field Sunday, March 8, as they visit Cumberland at 1 p.m.
