RUSSELLVILLE, Ark.—Three big innings were enough to lift host Arkansas Tech to a sweep of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Monday afternoon, winning the opener 5-3 and claiming an 11-1 win in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Lady Bucs (10-8, 2-4 GSC) jumped out to a quick lead with three unearned runs in the top of the first after a leadoff triple by
Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS).
After the Golden Suns (23-13, 7-3) scored a run in the first, they used a four-run fifth inning to take the lead and, eventually, the game as reliever Casey Hammons struck out 10 batters and only allowed one baserunner over the final six innings.
In the nightcap, the Golden Suns opened the floodgates quickly, scoring eight in the first and three more in the second to take a commanding 11-0 lead after two innings. Mathews scored the Lady Bucs' lone run in the third inning as she walked, stole second, and came home on a
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) base hit.
King finished 2-for-3 for the game.
The Lady Bucs return to action Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. as they visit Lambuth for a doubleheader.
