Late Homers Lift Lady Statesmen Past Lady Bucs

Kallie McFatter went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI in the nightcap, but the Lady Bucs were swept 4-2 and 7-6 at Delta State Saturday.
CLEVELAND, Miss.—Host Delta State took advantage of key late-inning home runs in both games as they swept the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 4-2 and 7-6 in Gulf South Conference play Saturday.

The Lady Statesmen (15-10, 4-2 GSC) took a lead quickly, scoring in the bottom of the first as Brittany Tillery drew a leadoff walk and scored on a pair of errors committed as she stole second base.

The Lady Bucs (10-10, 2-6) answered with a pair of runs in the third inning.  Michelle Paul (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Summit HS) hit a leadoff single, and Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice, as DSU tried to force Paul unsuccessfully.  Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) loaded the bases with a single, and a two-base error in center allowed two runs to score.

Delta State would deliver the knockout blow with the long ball in the bottom of the fifth.  Kristi Basso worked a leadoff walk, and after a sacrifice bunt, she scored the tying run on a Tillery single.  Brittany Eikner followed with a two-run homer to right-center.

From there, DSU hurler Edie Oliver retired six of the final seven batters from there, only allowing a Nelson bunt single as she closed out the victory.

Brewer led the Lady Bucs' offense in the first game, going 2-for-3.

In the nightcap, Tillery again helped the Lady Statesmen to a quick start.  She led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single, and she scored on a Courtney Clark single.

The Lady Bucs took a lead of their own quickly.  Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) reached on an error to start the top of the second, and Kallie McFatter (Mansfield, Texas/Summit HS) blasted a two-run homer to left-center to give the Lady Bucs a 2-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the inning, however, it was Delta answering with the long ball, as Tillery's two-run homer to center gave DSU a 3-2 lead.  A two-run Chelsea Carr double in the fourth put the Lady Statesmen ahead by a commanding 5-2 margin.

The Lady Bucs would answer again in the top of the fifth, batting around with two singles, two doubles, two walks, and an error to score four runs, taking a 6-5 lead as Mathews drew a bases-loaded walk.

The theme for the day held true in the final innings, though, as Eikner hit a game-tying homer in the fifth and Oliver hit another homer in the sixth for the game-winner.

DSU pitchers Brooke Allgood and Oliver combined to shut down seven of the last eight for the Lady Bucs, putting out the fire and preserving the win for DSU.

King went 3-for-4 in the nightcap for the Lady Bucs, while McFatter was 2-for-4 with three RBI.

The Lady Bucs and Lady Statesmen meet again Sunday at noon for another doubleheader.
