COLLIERVILLE, Tenn.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs pounded out 25 hits, scoring 26 runs as they swept a doubleheader from Rhodes Tuesday night at Collierville High School 10-1 and 15-4.
In the opener, the Lady Bucs (12-12) scored three runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to claim a 10-1 victory. They opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as
Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) singled and came home on a two-out
Alyse Brewer (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) base hit.
After Rhodes (21-5) tied the game with a Kelli Zomer homer to center in the top of the third, the Lady Bucs took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning.
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) led off with a single to right, and #Jessica Ambers hit a one-out single, moving to second as Rhodes threw home.
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) followed with a two-run triple and scored on another Brewer base hit, lifting the Lady Bucs to a 4-1 lead.
The lead was doubled an inning later. Nelson led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a throwing error. Mathews singled her home, then scored on the first of back-to-back bases-loaded walks before
Brooke Davis (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) hit a laser to second that turned into an inning-ending double play.
Mathews ended the game quickly in the fifth.
Michelle Paul (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Summit HS) hit an infield single, and Nelson followed with a walk before Mathews blasted a three-run homer to right to give the Lady Bucs a 10-1 win.
Mathews finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI. Brewer went 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Ambers and Nelson collected two hits each. Nelson also scored three runs.
Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) earned the win, striking out 12 batters with no walks as she allowed one run on three hits in five innings.
In the nightcap, with Rhodes playing as the home team, the Lynx scored three quick runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a three-run lead with two doubles and a two-run Rebekah Moore homer.
The Lady Bucs answered in a big way in the top of the third, tying the school record for runs in an inning with nine. They originally set the mark Feb. 18, 2003, also in the top of the third, against Lambuth.
Nelson started the inning with a double to left-center. Seven hits, an error, and two walks later, the Lady Bucs led 9-3. The Lady Bucs extended the lead to 10-3 as they scored a run on two fifth-inning errors, and they put the game away as they scored five times in the top of the sixth.
Mathews went 3-for-5 with a triple, three runs, and two RBI as she reached base safely all five appearances. Nelson went 2-for-3 with four runs and two RBI, while Ambers was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Kallie McFatter (Mansfield, Texas/Summit HS) earned the win as she allowed one unearned run on six hits and two walks in five and two-third innings out of the bullpen.
The Lady Bucs next head to Wilson Morgan Park in Decatur, Ala., for the Gulf South Conference Crossover, where they will face all six teams from the GSC East in a four-day span, beginning with a 6 p.m. Thursday game against No. 17 West Florida.
