LEBANON, Tenn.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs swept a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Cumberland, winning the first game 3-0 and taking a 7-6 win in nine innings in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Lady Bucs (8-4) rode the arm of senior pitcher
Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) to victory, as she tossed a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts to just one walk as she earned the first of two victories on the day.
Dunn provided all the run support she would need in the fifth and sixth innings. She drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a
Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) double. An inning later, she was on the other side of creating runs. After
Alyse Brewer (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) drew a leadoff walk,
Brooke Davis (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) and
Michelle Paul (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Summit HS) hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Dunn and
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) followed with RBI singles, giving the Lady Bucs a 3-0 lead.
Mathews led the Lady Bucs' offense with two of CBU's eight hits, both doubles.
Mathews excelled again in the nightcap, reaching safely all five times and scoring three runs.
She led off the first with a bunt single, and with four more singles and a walk, the Lady Bucs batted around in the first, scoring three runs to take a quick lead.
The Bulldogs (2-8) cut into the lead steadily, scoring a run in the first and another in the third to pull within one.
Mathews drew a leadoff walk in the fifth and scored on a
Kallie McFatter (Mansfield, Texas/Summit HS) single to extend the Lady Bucs' lead to 4-2, but the lead would be short-lived as the Bulldogs scored three runs on four hits and an error in the inning, taking a 5-4 lead into the seventh.
Mathews again came up big in the seventh, hitting a leadoff double down the left field line. She scored on a sacrifice fly by
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS). McFatter drew a two-out walk and scored on a fielder's choice just before Brewer was tagged out at third for the final out.
Cumberland's Karla Pladna homered down the left field line to tie the game with one out, and Jackie West doubled a batter later. She was stranded on third, however, as Dunn, who entered as a reliever in the fifth, struck out Tonya Barlow with two out.
Neither team scored in the eighth, and just like she did in the first game, Dunn scored her own game-winning run. She was placed on second to start the inning with the international tiebreaker rule in effect. She was sacrificed to third base, and after she was unable to score on an infield single by Mathews, she came home on a
Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) squeeze bunt.
Dunn (7-1) finished off the win with three straight infield popouts in the bottom of the ninth. She tossed 4.2 innings of relief, allowing a run on three hits with four strikeouts.
Mathews went 4-for-4 with three runs to lead the Lady Bucs' nine-hit attack. McFatter singled twice and scored two runs, while King drove in a pair of runs.
The Lady Bucs will return to the field Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host Blackburn.
