MEMPHIS—Christian Brothers University senior pitcher
Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss., Southaven HS) carried a perfect game into the 10th inning in the first game of Saturday afternoon's Gulf South Conference twinbill with Arkansas-Monticello, but the Lady Bucs were swept 5-3 and 6-0.
Dunn (12-9) was nothing short of brilliant in the opener, mowing down 27 straight to start the game with 16 flyouts, four groundouts, and seven strikeouts. The Lady Bucs (14-20, 4-16 GSC), however, couldn't capitalize at the plate, stranding four runners in scoring position -- one each in the second, third, sixth, and ninth innings.
In the 10th, however, the Cotton Blossoms (30-7, 9-5) finally solved Dunn. Lindsey Randall led off with a bunt single, advancing the international tiebreaker runner, Bethany Falcon, to third base. A sac fly and an error scored two runs, and UAM plated three more two-out runs thanks to three more hits and another error.
The Lady Bucs scored three runs in the bottom of the 10th, bringing the tying run to bat with one out, but they were unable to score again.
For the game, Dunn finished with eight strikeouts as she allowed five runs, one earned, on four hits with no walks.
Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while
Brooke Davis (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
In the second game, one big inning caused all of the damage, with UAM scoring six runs in a fourth inning that featured three hits, three errors, and a walk. UAM pitcher Randa Perry did the rest, allowing just two hits and a walk in the shutout. Mathews and
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) collected a hit each in the second game.
The Lady Bucs return to action Tuesday at 2 p.m. as they visit Williams Baptist for a doubleheader.
