MEMPHIS—Freshman pitcher
Kristin Walters (Paris, Tenn., Henry County HS) tossed her second shutout in a span of just over 12 hours Saturday as the Lady Bucs swept Southern Arkansas in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader, winning the opener 2-1 in eight innings and claiming the second game 3-0.
In the opener, the Lady Bucs (18-22, 7-17 GSC) fell behind in the first inning as Katelyn Worsham scored on a Denise Amador double to put SAU (6-31, 5-17) on top. Senior hurler
Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) dominated the rest of the way, though, retiring 23 of 24 batters after the run scored.
After stranding seven runners in the first five innings, the Lady Bucs broke through in the sixth as Dunn hit a one-out double and scored on a
Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) single. The Lady Bucs again left the bases loaded in the sixth, however, as the game went to extra innings.
In the eighth, Ambers singled to right-center with one out, and a
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) single pushed her up to third base. Freshman outfielder
Shanae Farrell (Memphis, Tenn./Whitehaven HS) singled on a sharp grounder back up the middle that was deflected by SAU pitcher Alexandra Doyle, scoring Ambers for the game-winner.
Nelson and Ambers each went 3-for-4 in the opener. Dunn allowed one unearned run on three hits as she struck out eight.
In the second game, the Lady Bucs only put runners on base in two innings, and three of the four runners scored.
Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) led off the first inning with a single to right, and
Michelle Paul (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Summit HS) followed with a bunt single, and a throwing error allowed Mathews to score. Paul moved to third on a pair of wild pitches before
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) drove her in with a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Bucs' other run came in the sixth as Farrell drew a leadoff walk and scored on a wild pitch after moving to third on an error and a Paul single.
Walters was excellent again Saturday, shutting out the Lady Muleriders on six hits and a walk, and she pitched around a pair of errors as well as she stranded 10 SAU baserunners.
Paul went 2-for-3 in the second game.
The Lady Bucs return to action Wednesday as they visit Lambuth at 4 p.m. They come home next weekend to face Ouachita Baptist Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
