Lady Bucs Split With OBU

Kathleen Nelson drove in the game-winning run in the seventh inning to lift the Lady Bucs to a 5-4 win in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against Ouachita Baptist. OBU won game one 6-0.
MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs rallied in dramatic fashion to claim a 5-4 win in the nightcap of Saturday afternoon's Gulf South Conference doubleheader against Ouachita Baptist, staying alive in the GSC Tournament hunt despite losing the first game 6-0.

In the nightcap, the Lady Bucs (20-24, 8-18 GSC) took an early lead.  In the bottom of the second, Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) singled on a sharp ground ball the pitcher deflected, and she scored on a two-out throwing error.

In the third inning, sophomore centerfielder Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) hit a double to center, breaking the school record for hits in a season with 62.

They doubled their lead in the fourth as Dunn reached on an error and came home on a Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) single.

In the top of the fifth, however, it was OBU (23-28, 11-18) who capitalized on poor defense, using three singles, three errors, and a walk to score three runs and take their first lead of the game.  The Lady Bucs committed two more errors in the sixth inning, allowing OBU to score again and take a 4-2 lead.

The Lady Bucs shaved a run off the margin in the bottom of the sixth.  Dunn reached on an infield single and scored on another RBI single from Ambers.

In the seventh, Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) hit a one-out single to center.  She moved to third on an Alyse Brewer (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) hit, but she was tagged out trying to score as Brewer was in a rundown between first and second.  Kallie McFatter (Mansfield, Texas/Summit HS) hit a single up the middle to put runners on the corners, and Dunn tied the game with an RBI single to center.  Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) smashed a grounder down the left field line to score McFatter for the winning run.

Dunn went 3-for-4 with three runs, while Ambers and King collected two hits each.  In addition to the winning hit, Nelson laid down a pair of sacrifice bunts to help Dunn score.

In the opener, OBU pitcher Kristen Rigsbee put on a show, blasting two homers and scoring three runs at the plate and tossing a seven-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts.

Rigsbee started the damage with two outs in the first as she homered off the left-field scoreboard.  In the third, she hit another homer, this one a three-run shot to right-center, to lift the Lady Tigers to a 4-0 lead.  After being walked, Rigsbee scored on a Taylor Austin double in the fifth inning, and Sarah Bell capped the scoring with a sixth-inning homer to left.

The Lady Bucs put a runner on base in five of the seven innings, with seven hits and an error, but Rigsbee pitched her way out of trouble every time.

The Lady Bucs and Lady Tigers meet again for another doubleheader Sunday at noon.

With a sweep, the Lady Bucs would remain alive in their quest for the final berth in next weekend's GSC Tournament.  With a sweep, the Lady Bucs would be win behind OBU for the final spot, and they would make up a doubleheader at Arkansas Tech that was rained out in March.  An OBU victory in either game would clinch the West Division No. 4 seed for the Lady Tigers.
