MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs tied the school record for wins in a season as they split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader with Ouachita Baptist on the final day of their season, winning the nightcap 8-3 after OBU wrapped up the last GSC Tournament berth with a 12-1 win in the first game.
The Lady Bucs (21-25, 9-19 GSC) pounded out 16 hits in the nightcap, scoring in four of their six innings at the plate. After OBU (24-29, 12-18) scored twice in the top of the first,
VIctoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) doubled to left to start the inning. She scored on a
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) single.
Alyse Brewer (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) laid down a bunt single, and a
Kallie McFatter (Mansfield, Texas/Summit HS) double and a
Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) sacrifice fly gave the Lady Bucs a lead they would never relinquish.
In the third inning, King led off with a triple down the right field line, and she scored on a McFatter single. The Lady Bucs tacked on two more in the fourth and sixth innings to pull away for the victory.
King was 3-for-4 and scored four runs, while Brewer and McFatter also went 3-for-4. Mathews was 3-for-3, and
Michelle Paul (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Summit HS) went 2-for-3.
Dunn closed out her stellar career with another solid outing, picking up the win with a complete game four-hitter. She struck out six,, bringing her career total to 868, fourth-most in GSC history. She finished 53-51 with a 2.26 ERA in 130 appearances.
In the opener, the Lady Bucs entered the GSC record book in a bad way, tying the GSC single-game record with 10 errors as they dropped the 12-1 decision in five innings.
The Lady Bucs committed four errors in OBU's seven-run first inning, and three more errors helped the Lady Tigers score four in the third.
The Lady Bucs' lone run against OBU hurler Kristen Rigsbee came in the third inning. Mathews legged out a two-out infield single, and she scored on a double by Paul. Rigsbee held the Lady Bucs to just three hits, as King also singled in the first.
The Lady Bucs tied the school record for wins in a season with 21, equaling the mark set when the 2006 team went 21-36. The 9-19 GSC record is also tied for their best since joining the league in 1997.
