Lady Bucs Drop Two Nailbiters in GSC Crossover

Victoria Mathews went 3-for-8 on the day, but the Lady Bucs were swept 4-3 and 1-0 in Friday's action of the Gulf South Conference Crossover in Decatur, Ala.
DECATUR, Ala.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs lost two heartbreakers Friday in the Gulf South Conference Crossover at Wilson Morgan Park, falling 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh to West Georgia and dropping a 1-0 decision to West Alabama in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Lady Bucs (12-14, 2-10) struck first with a three-run top of the third.  Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) started the inning with a one-out single, and Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) followed with another single.  After Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) laid down a sacrifice bunt, Alyse Brewer (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) hit a two-run single to right-center.  Brewer moved up on an error, and she scored on a passed ball with two out.

The Wolves (20-18, 4-6) shaved a run off the lead in the fourth inning with a pair of singles, but the crushing blow came in the bottom of the seventh.  After a pair of singles, a one-out Paige Hanson sacrifice fly cut the lead to 3-2.  Candice Brown hit a single to right-center, and Kim Weaver's two-run double ended the game.

King went 2-for-3 in the first game for the Lady Bucs, who collected eight hits.  Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) allowed four runs, all earned, on seven hits and two walks.  She struck out five batters in six and two-third innings.

In the nightcap, a first-inning homer from Lauren Mills proved to be the difference, providing the only run in a 1-0 West Alabama (31-7, 5-5) victory.  Dunn (10-7) was brilliant the rest of the way, allowing just the one run on four hits as she struck out eight.

Mathews went 2-for-4 with a double as she reached base safely three times.

The Lady Bucs will return to action Saturday.  They face North Alabama at noon before facing No. 2 Alabama-Huntsville at 2 p.m.
