DECATUR, Ala.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs were swept in their final day of the Gulf South Conference Crossover Sunday, losing 11-3 to No. 8 Valdosta State and 8-3 to No. 17 West Florida.
In the first game, Valdosta State (34-5, 10-1 GSC) jumped out quickly, scoring three runs in the first and four in the second to take a 7-0 lead. After a
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) homer put the Lady Bucs (13-17, 3-13) on the board in the top of the third, the Blazers scored three more in the third and one in the fourth.
Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth to set the final margin. Mathews went 2-for-3, collecting half of the Lady Bucs' four hits in the game.
In the second game, West Florida (34-9, 9-5) scored seven runs between the fourth and fifth innings to blow open what had been a tie game. Mathews sparked the Lady Bucs to an early lead with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first inning. The Argos answered with a run on three hits and a walk in the third inning, but
Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) pitched out of the jam with the game still tied.
A pair of homers sparked a four-run fifth inning for the Argos, a solo shot from Kristee Wheeler and a three-run bomb by Shannon Miles to push the lead to 5-1. Mathews scored again in the fifth inning as she hit a one-out single and scored on a King squeeze bunt.
The Argos tacked on three more runs in the sixth on two hits, a walk, a hit batter, and an error, pushing the lead out to 8-2. The Lady Bucs set the final margin in the bottom of the seventh as Mathews scored yet again. She reached on an error to start the inning. After moving to third on a
Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) sacrifice bunt, she scored on a bunt single from King.
Mathews went 3-for-4, reaching base safely all four times as she scored all three runs for the Lady Bucs.
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) added two bunt singles as the Lady Bucs had eight hits for the game.
