Lady Bucs Split First GSC DH

Stephanie Keaton hit a two-run single in game one and a homer in game two as the Lady Bucs split a doubleheader with Arkansas Tech Friday.
MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split their first Gulf South Conference doubleheader of the season Friday afternoon against Arkansas Tech, winning the first game 6-1 but dropping the nightcap 6-4.

The Lady Bucs (11-9, 1-1 GSC) struck first in the first game as Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS) hit a second-inning double and scored on a Lauren Dorsett (Mufreesboro, Tenn./Blackman HS) single.  They took control in the third, scoring three runs on four straight hits to start the inning.  Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) singled, and Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) and Alana Kramer (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) smoked back-to-back doubles.  Brooke Davis (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) followed with a single to score Kramer and put CBU in front 4-0.

After ATU (12-12, 2-4) scored a run in the fifth, the Lady Bucs tacked on two more in the bottom of the fifth on a Stephanie Keaton (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) single to set the final margin.

Ambers went 3-for-4 in the game, while Kramer also had two hits and scored twice.  Keaton picked up two RBI.  Brewer improved to 5-3 as she allowed one unearned run on four hits and two walks.  She struck out three in the complete game victory.

In the second game, ATU jumped out to a lead in the top of the first, scoring on a wild pitch.  Keaton tied the game back up in the bottom of the second as she blasted a homer to left.  ATU retook the lead in the top of the third on a Roxie Palacios double, but the Lady Bucs tied it again in the fifth as Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) laid down a bunt single and scored on a King single.

ATU capitalized on three errors in the sixth, extending the inning to leadoff hitter Tiphani Moon, who hit a three-run double to break the tie.

Nelson hit an RBI double to score pinch-runner Shanae Farrell (Memphis, Tenn./Whitehaven HS) in the sixth to cut the lead back to two runs.  ATU's Whitlee McGill homered in the seventh, and the Lady Bucs scored once in the seventh on a Davis single to set the final margin at 6-4.

Nelson went 2-for-4 for the Lady Bucs in game two.

The Lady Bucs face ATU again Saturday to complete the four-game series.  First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
