MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader with Henderson State Tuesday afternoon, taking a 3-2 win in the nightcap after falling 6-4 in the first game.
In the opener, the Lady Bucs (12-12, 2-4 GSC) took an early lead with a run in the second and two in the fourth.
Alyse Brewer (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) drove in the first run with a groundout after
Brooke Davis (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) hit a leadoff single.
In the fourth,
Lauren Dorsett (Mufreesboro, Tenn./Blackman HS) blasted a two-run double to center to push the lead to 3-0 after a Davis walk and a
Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS) single. The Lady Reddies (10-13, 2-4) answered with five in the top of the fifth, batting around on four singles, a hit batter, and a three-run double.
The Lady Bucs cut the margin to 5-4 in the bottom of the inning as
Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) hit a leadoff single and came home on an
Alana Kramer (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) base hit, but CBU wouldn't score again and the Lady Reddies tacked on another run in the seventh.
Ambers went 2-for-3 in the first game. Dorsett drove in two, while Davis scored twice.
In the second game, the Lady Bucs left two on in the first inning but found paydirt in the second. Brewer was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and
Alyse Brewer (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) singled. Dorsett walked to load the bases, and a
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) walk and an Ambers single gave the Lady Bucs a 2-0 lead.
They tacked another run onto the lead in the third as Kaylea Brewer hit a leadoff double to right-center and scored on a Dorsett single up the middle.
The Lady Reddies' offense in game two came in the fourth inning as Miranda Vest doubled and scored on a Blair Whitehead triple. Whitehead came around to score on the play as the Lady Bucs' throw bounced off her helmet and out of play.
Michelle McEachron (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) picked up the win, evening her record at 5-5 as she allowed two runs, one earned, in four and a third innings. She allowed three hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Ambers went 2-for-4 in the game, while Kaylea Brewer scored twice after tossing two and two-third shutout innings before giving way to McEachron.
The Lady Bucs face HSU again tomorrow afternoon for another 2 p.m. doubleheader.
