Lady Bucs Swept in Close Games

Brooke Davis went 5-for-8 with two runs and two RBI in the doubleheader against Henderson State, but the Lady Bucs were swept 6-0 in eight innings and 9-8 Wednesday afternoon.
MEMPHIS—A day after splitting a pair of close Gulf South Conference games against Henderson State, the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs were swept 6-0 in eight innings and 9-8 Wednesday afternoon to drop the series.

The first game was scoreless through seven innings before the Lady Reddies (12-13, 4-4 GSC) used three singles, a double, a homer, a hit batter, and two errors to plate six runs in the top of the eighth to break the tie.

The big eighth spoiled a strong outing by Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS), who allowed four runs, three earned, in seven-plus innings.  She allowed five hits and a walk with nine strikeouts.

Brewer, Brooke Davis (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS), and Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) each went 2-for-4, but the Lady Bucs (12-14, 2-6) left 11 runners on base, including eight in scoring position.

The Lady Reddies picked up right where they left off in the second game, scoring six in the top of the first as they sent 10 batters to the plate on four singles, a double, a walk, and a hit batter.  After HSU scored two more to extend the lead to 8-0 in the top of the third, the Lady Bucs made a game of it.

Michelle McEachron (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) started the rally as she drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the third.  After another walk followed, Davis smoked an RBI single up the middle to break the shutout.  #King loaded the bases with a single.  An error on a squeeze bunt allowed two runs to score, and another squeeze and an infield groundout pushed two more runs across to pull the Lady Bucs within an 8-5 margin.

Both teams scored once in the fifth, and the Lady Bucs cut the margin to one run with two in the sixth.  Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) drew a one-out walk and scored on a Davis double.  Davis came home as King singled to center to cut the lead to 9-8, but she was stranded and the Lady Bucs couldn't capitalize on a leadoff walk in the seventh.

Davis and King collected three hits each, accounting for all six CBU hits.  Nelson, Davis, and King scored twice, while Davis had two RBI.

The Lady Bucs return to the field Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. as they take on Delta State in their final home GSC series of the season.
