Strong Pitching Lifts CBU to Split

Michelle McEachron (above) and Kaylea Brewer combined for a two-hit shutout as the Lady Bucs won game two over Delta State Saturday afternoon.
MEMPHIS—Christian Brothers University pitchers Michelle McEachron (Carlsbad, Calif., La Costa Canyon HS) and Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn., Giles County HS) combined for a two-hit shutout as the Lady Bucs picked up a 2-0 win in game two against Delta State after DSU won the opener 6-1.

The Lady Bucs (13-15, 3-7 Gulf South Conference) received strong pitching in both games.  In the opener, Brewer held DSU (19-14, 7-7) to just one run on three hits over the first five innings before the Lady Statesmen pulled away with a four-run sixth inning on two hits, two walks, a hit batter, and two wild pitches.

The Lady Bucs used a pair of bunt singles by Brewer and Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) to manufacture a run in the bottom of the sixth, but DSU scored an unearned run in the seventh to set the final margin.

Brewer (5-7) finished with five runs allowed in five and a third innings, allowing five hits with three strikeouts.  McEachron allowed an unearned run on two hits and a walk in an inning and two-thirds.

In the nightcap, McEachron shut DSU down on two hits in four and two-third innings, allowing three walks and striking out five.  Brewer only allowed one baserunner, on an error, over the final two and a third innings as she picked up her second save.

The Lady Bucs found all the offense they would need in the first inning as Nelson drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) single.  Nelson drove in the game's other run on a double to center in the fourth, scoring Alana Kramer (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS), who led off the inning with a single to right.

King went 2-for-3 in the second game.

Weather permitting, the Lady Bucs and Lady Statesmen are scheduled to meet for another doubleheader tomorrow at noon.
