DECATUR, Ala.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs lost a pair of close games in Saturday afternoon's Gulf South Conference Crossover action, losing 3-0 to West Florida and 5-4 to West Alabama.
In the first game, the Argos (32-9, 11-7 GSC) tossed a five-hit shutout behind the combined efforts of Victoria Harvey and Jillian Lafrance, who stranded nine CBU (16-24, 5-15) baserunners.
UWF took the lead in the bottom of the first inning as Amber Ingram walked, stole second, and scored on a Shannon Miles base hit. They tacked on two more in the fifth to set the final margin, on two singles, a double, a hit batter, and a wild pitch.
Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) led the Lady Bucs with two hits, while
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS),
Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS), and
Alana Kramer (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) each singled. CBU left the bases loaded in the sixth inning and left runners on second and third to end the game.
In the second game, West Alabama (30-18, 7-11) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh as they rallied for a come-from-behind victory over CBU.
UWA scored first in the second inning as Caitlyn Bonham hit an RBI single, scoring Jessica Powell, who reached on an error. The Lady Bucs tied the game at one as they scored on an error themselves. Nelson singled up the middle with one out, stole second, and moved to third on a groundout before scoring as
Kaylea Brewer (Pulaski, Tenn./Giles County HS) reached on a two-out error.
The Lady Bucs took their first lead of the day an inning later as
Brooke Davis (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) was hit by a pitch and scored on a Nelson single to center. They pushed the lead to 3-1 in the sixth inning when Kramer walked, stole second, and came home on a
Shanae Farrell (Memphis, Tenn./Whitehaven HS) single.
UWA shaved a run off the lead in the bottom of the sixth, pushing a run across on a single, two hit batters, and a walk.
The Lady Bucs restored their two-run edge in the top of the seventh as Kramer walked and scored on an
Emily Schmidt (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill HS) single.
UWA started the seventh with back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice fly scored the first run, a walk and an error loaded the bases for Bonham, who hit a two-run single to right to give UWA the victory.
Nelson was 2-for-4, and
Lauren Dorsett (Mufreesboro, Tenn./Blackman HS) also added two hits for the Lady Bucs, while Schmidt, King, and Farrell each singled.
Michelle McEachron (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) turned in a strong start, allowing one unearned run on four hits in four and a third innings, striking out three.
The Lady Bucs close out GSC Crossover play tomorrow. They face No. 11 Alabama-Huntsville at 10 a.m., and they wrap up the Crossover with a 2 p.m. game against North Alabama.
